Ukrainian journalists’ fear over Russian threat

A Ukrainian journalist visiting Sheffield spoke to Sheffield Live! about fears for the country following the recent maritime clash with Russia. Sheffield Live! reporter Baillor Jalloh spoke to Yevgeniya Kubakh of the media and community organisation Community Unity during a visit of Ukrainian journalists to Sheffield.

Campaigners stage migrants welcome rally

Dozens have joined a rally outside the Sheffield Town Hall to show support for migrants and refugees and the right to freedom of movement. The rally under the banners “Don’t scrap freedom of movement” and “Migrants are welcome in Sheffield,” comes following publication of government plans for post Brexit immigration controls. Christmas campaign to support the vulnerable and homeless

The Help Us Help campaign to tackle begging and support the homeless has been launched this week backed by local businesses and support organisations. More than 20 local businesses, including John Lewis, Virgin Money and McDonalds, have joined the campaign to help vulnerable people on the street with advice to the public and a call for donations of clothing and other goods. Homelessness on the increase in Yorkshire

There are more than 5,000 people homeless in Yorkshire, an increase of 600 since 2017, according to a new report by the homelessness charity Shelter. Sheffield councillor Jim Steinke, cabinet member for neighbourhood and community safety, told Sheffield Live! there has been an increase in homelessness in Sheffield but the Council is doing more to tackle the problem. Nationally, according to Shelter, 32,000 people are living in temporary accommodation or sleeping rough.

Roy Bailey RIP

Legendary folk singer Roy Bailey passed away peacefully on Tuesday, aged 83. He played to sell out concerts and festivals around the world for over 50 years. Roy was formerly Dean of Faculty of Education, Health and Welfare at what is now Sheffield Hallam University and he was appointed professor in 1989. He chose to make Sheffield his home and to many he was the voice of the people, as he sang songs about working lives and socialism.

Crime victims supported to meet their offenders

As part of Restorative Justice Week, victims of crime are being supported to meet their offenders to discuss the impact of the crime and repair the harm. Restorative justice schemes are designed to offer victims the chance to be heard, to get answers to questions and to provide a sense of closure. Baillor Jalloh reports for Sheffield Live!

GB wheelchair basketball recognised in Hall of Champions

The GB men’s wheelchair basketball team have been inducted into the Hall of Champions at the English Institute of Sport in recognition of their 2018 World Championships win in Hamburg. The team profile joins the likes of Anthony Joshua and Jessica Ennis in the Hall of Champions gallery. Its the first time the team has won the World Championship trophy and they are one of the youngest teams in the world with an average age of 27. Waste food project finds appetite for more

The Real Junk Food Project Sheffield is planning to expand following the success of its pay-as-you feel food recycling store, cafes and schools programme. The Burngreave-based social enterprise has launched a crowdfunding drive under the banner ‘Food Works Not Food Waste’. It is seeking to raise funds for a warehouse to preserve, store and cook food as well as expanding its educational activities. World Toilet Day aims to get people talking

Irritable Bowel Syndrome, or IBS, affects thousands of people in South Yorkshire and millions across the UK, but many sufferers are too embarrassed to talk about it. As part of World Toilet Day, the IBS Network aims to raise awareness on how to manage IBS and about safe and clean sanitation around the world. Sheffield Live! reporter Baillor spoke to IBS Network chief executive, Alison Reid.

Job fears as Johnston Press rescue plan revealed

Johnston Press, which owns a string of local newspapers including the Sheffield Star and the Yorkshire Post has gone into administration with debts of more than £200m. The group, which publishes more than 200 regional titles as well as the national “i” paper, has written off part of its debt burden through a “pre-pack” takeover by the company’s former bondholders. It is hoped the deal will secure jobs and continued publication. Sheffield Live! reporter Baillor Jalloh spoke to Chris Molly of the National Union of Journalists.
