Sheffield sweet enough

Sheffield Council has launched a campaign to reduce sugar intake and to promote healthy eating. Almost two thirds of Sheffield adults are said to be overweight and one in four children are above a healthy weight when they start school. The amount of tooth decay is also a concern with over 2,000 children from across the city hospitalised for painful tooth extractions in just one year. The campaign includes a guide book on how to cut down sugar as well as recipes for food ideas. Fifty percent of the books printed will be donated to lower-income families in Sheffield whilst the rest will be on sale at retail outlets across the city. New engineering hub launches in Sheffield

Software services provider Tes has launched a new engineering hub in Sheffield to develop products for teachers and schools. Tes already employs over 200 people in the city and expects to add 20 more jobs. The new engineering hub will focus on timetabling tools, classroom management software and a platform for teacher development. Azz Mohammed reports for Sheffield Live!

Beat the Street launches in Sheffield

A national programme to help people get fit and active following the lockdown has arrived in Sheffield. Beat the Street challenges people, schools, workplaces and community groups to see how far they can walk, run, scoot, wheel or cycle in return for points and prizes. It also aims to encourage people to explore their local community anew and discover routes and areas they may not know. The programme is free to take part and open to all ages. Care home workers receive wage boost

Care home staff in Barnsley are to receive a cash boost to their pay after negotiations between Barnsley Independent Care Home Association and the local authority. A new agreement on fee levels will see direct care workers receive a minimum of £1 extra per hour, above the national living wage. Health chiefs urge caution as lockdown eases

As part of the plan to ease out of lockdown, groups of up to six people are now allowed to socialise outdoors in groups of six, but Sheffield health chiefs have urged the public to maintain other precautions. Family launch legacy appeal for Secret Garden project

The family of a man who sadly lost his life to Covid-19 has launched a £100,000 legacy appeal in his memory, one year on from his death. Raj Aggarwal owned the Hackenthorpe branch of Spar, along with other shops across the region and was a well known figure who worked tirelessly to provide food and drink supplies to frontline NHS Workers at the start of the pandemic. His wife Sunita Aggarwal has decided to launch a campaign to raise funds towards the Secret Garden project for staff and patients at the Northern General Hospital for staff and patients. Festival of Debate to go online for a second year

The Festival of Debate has announced some of its big name speakers as it prepares for a second online edition. Speakers lined up include famed economist Yanis Varoufakis, Labour MP David Lammy and writer Maya Goodfellow. Sheffield Live! reporter Azz Mohammed spoke to festival director Joe Kriss.

Deliveroo drivers stage national strike

A rally in Sheffield city centre was organised by the local branch of the International Workers Union (IWGB) in support of the first ever national strike by Deliveroo drivers demanding better pay and conditions. A recent investigation found that some drivers received as little as two pounds an hour for delivering food on the company’s behalf. Sheffield Live! reporter Azz Mohammed spoke to Deliveroo driver Ali Raiwy who was at the protest.

Sheffield Live welcomes DAB licence award

The licence to operate a new digital audio broadcasting (DAB) service for Sheffield and Rotherham has been awarded to a partnership of community media organisations including Sheffield Live. Shefcast Digital promises to bring around 25 new local, community and specialist radio services to digital radio audience. Azz Mohammed spoke to Sangita Basudev, chief executive of Sheffield Live and one of the founding directors of Shefcast Digital.

Hundreds join Kill the Bill demonstration on Devonshire Green

Hundreds of demonstrators took part in a further protest at the weekend to oppose the Policing, Sentencing and Courts Bill which critics say gives police excessive powers to crack down on peaceful protest. The Sheffield rally was one of around thirty similar events held at locations across the country. Sheffied Live! reporter Azz Mohammed spoke to Abdullah Okud from Black Lives Matter, one of the speakers at the Kill the Bill rally.
