Award winning social enterprise, Printed By Us, has opened a retail shop in Sheffield’s Orchard Square selling T-shrts, hoodies, mugs and other printed products to raise funds for homeless people. Printed by us is a not for profit organisation and [part of the Archer Project which helps homeless people find new opportunities and better living conditions. Sheffield Council have teamed up with Voluntary Action Sheffield, community organisations, faith groups and businesses to open up libraries, community centres and other buildings to provide warm spaces for people during the day. The aim is to offer a place to drop in and have a hot drink, meet other people and take part in activities during the day without having the cost of putting on home heating. Tenants in 255 council houses scheduled for home insulation improvements are now set to watch their energy bills rocket this winter due to a delay in contracting the work. The scheme originally proposed in March 2021 would have seen £2.3m spent on insulating selected council homes this year, upgrading energy performance and substantially reducing heating bills for their tenants. Delays in a tender award mean the works may not begin now before 2024. Sheffield’s National Emergency Services Museum has won a national award as the UK’s most family friendly museum. The independent museum faced closure following the Covid-19 lockdown period and was saved by a crowdfunding campaign. Among its exhibitions and features are historical vehicles and equipment includin a fire pump dating back to 1710. A community repair service shop has opened in Abbeyfield Park House, Burngreave, to offer low cost repairs of all sorts of broken items that might otherwise go to waste. Reyt Repairs is a social enterprise set up to support repair and re-use of broken items for just a small repair charge. Sheffield Live! reporter Azz Mohammed spoke to Gareth Coleman, director of Reyt Repairs.
A pioneering urine screening trial, funded by Yorkshire Cancer Research, will provide thousands of men with bladder cancer self-test kits. Nearly 1000 people are diagnosed and over four hundred people die from bladder cancer every year in Yorkshire. 3,000 men between 65 and 80 will take part in the study across the region. The aim is to spot any concerns before they become more complicated. Sharrow’s autumn carnival parade is set to return on 4 November with activities in Highfield Adventure Playground from 4pm and a lantern parade around the streets of Sharrow. The family event, organised by community arts group Ignite Imaginations with Sharrow Community Forum, is free and will feature fire spinners, entertainment and hot food.
