Protests continue against Kashmir crackdown

British Kashmiri’s and their supporters organised a march in Sheffield town centre to protest the Indian government decision to end the autonomous status of Jammu and Kashmir. Since the decision the territory has been in lockdown with thousands of additional troops sent to the region which has been the subject of a dispute between India, Pakistan and China since 1947. Labour councillors should get on with their job, says opposition leader

Sheffield Liberal Democrat leader, councillor Penny Baker, has told Labour councillors they should get on with the job of serving the people and stop the current in-fighting. The comments come after six labour councillors resigned over the weekend from Sheffield City Council cabinet positions in a row over the way the authority is run. A public petition called for a switch to a committee system of decision-making could prompt a city-wide referendum. Baillor Jalloh reports for Sheffield Live!

Green Party slams Sheffield clean air consultation

Sheffield’s Green Party has described the city’s clean air zone consultation as a “missed opportunity for meaningful change” because of its omitting to include private cars. Speaking to Sheffield Live! councillor Douglas Johnson said that if private cars had been part of the consultation process it would have led to more public engagement. The formal consultation process ended on the 25 August. Baillor Jalloh reports.

Sheffield nurse launches debut music album

Rose Deline Bazzie, a Liberian refugee who came to Sheffield 15 years ago has launched her debut music album called Grateful Heart. The artist, a professional nurse, moved to the city in 2014 under the United Nations gateway program. Baillor Jalloh reports for Sheffield Live!

Stainless steel inventor honoured with Portland Works plaque

A plaque dedicated to stainless steel inventor Harry Brearley has been unveiled at Portland Works by Sheffield United chairman and co-owner Kevin McCabe. Brearley is said to have had the first samples of stainless steel created at the Portland Works factory in 1913 when he introduced his idea to Ernest Stuart, manager at local cutler company R. F. Deputy council leader quits over Sheffield decision-making

Sheffield City Council deputy leader, Olivia Blake, has resigned after backing a petition which calls for replacement of the council’s “strong leader” model with a more open committee-based decision-making system. The petition, brought forward by campaign group Its Our City, calls for a referendum over the leadership model and has been signed by over 26,000 residents. Campaigners handed the petition in to the local authority on Friday. Baillor Jalloh reports for Sheffield Live!

Deliveroo drivers protest against low pay

More than a dozen couriers working for Deliveroo held a demonstration in Sheffield city centre protesting a reduction of their minimum payment rate from £4.25 to £3.15 per delivery. A spokesperson for Deliveroo told Sheffield Live! “We’ve recently introduced changes that mean Deliveroo is investing even more in rider fees. Since making these changes riders in Sheffield are earning over £11.00 per hour on average.” Baillor Jalloh reports.

Sheffield hosts underwater hockey championship

Hundreds of athletes from 13 countries have been in Sheffield to take part in the world’s underwater hockey championship which is being held at Ponds Forge. The hectic sport which began in the 1950s is becoming increasingly popular with more than 100 teams across the UK. Team GB’s U24 and U19 are taking part in the competition and will be hoping to qualify for the final on Saturday. Baillor Jalloh reports for Sheffield Live!

Watson’s Walk plaque honours pioneering surgeon

A plaque honouring the legacy of William Marsden, founder of London’s Royal Marsden Hospital, has been unveiled at Watson’s Walk in Sheffield. The surgeon was born in Sheffield in a house near to the top of the original Watson’s Walk in 1796, close to the Dove and Rainbow pub in Hartshead Square.
