Homeless at greater risk following Archer Project fire

Shaffaq Mohammed, Liberal Democrat leader on Sheffield Council is calling for a citywide fundraising campaign to support the homeless. The Archer Project, a leading homelessness charity, has closed due to a recent fire caused during a break in. Councillor Shaffaq Mohammed also called on other providers to step in to help those needing food and support. Azz Mohammed reports for Sheffield Live!

University applicants face uncertain future

Sixth form students seeking university places face an uncertain summer with exams cancelled and grades to be awarded on the basis of their previous academic performance. Some are worried they will not get the grades required to make it to their first choice institution. Will Burton, a Tapton School student, feels comfortable with his performance during sixth form but said others were less confident and struggling with the uncertainty as they wait to hear the outcome of the new assessment method. Reflecting on the school closures he said to Sheffield Live! “I don’t think it’s really hit me yet. Obviously it’s been a while since we finished now, but it was just very sudden. Lots of people were quite emotional.” Beth Gavaghan reports.

With the celebration of Eid and the end of Ramadan, Sheffield Council is reminding people to maintain safety measures including social distancing to prevent the spread of the coronavirus. Sheffield University engineers help tackle PPE shortage

Engineering staff at the University of Sheffield are helping tackle the coronavirus pandemic by producing personal protective equipment for medical staff using 3D printers. Dr Pete Mylon, a senior engineering teacher told Sheffield Live! his team have produced dozens of face shields for staff in South Yorkshire hospitals using the university’s iForge makerspace. Drivers advised to be aware of cyclists and pedestrians

As vehicles return to the roads South Yorkshire Police and the Safer Roads Partnership are asking drivers to reduce their speed and to be alert to other road users including cyclists and pedestrians. People have become accustomed to fewer cars on the roads and a growing number have taken up cycling to avoid using public transport during the lockdown. Care homes demand improved funding

Silver Healthcare, which employs over 60 staff, is among care home providers demanding to know why Sheffield Council is only offering a 5 per cent fees increase to address underfunding of care homes. Government has announced a £1.6b funding package to local authorities including support for care providers. A petition has been launched to raise the issue of funding and personal protective equipment. Sheffield Live reporter Azz Mohamed spoke to Roy Young, managing director for Silver Healthcare.

Halal food bank opens in Nether Edge

Nether Edge and Sharrow Food Bank has been set up on Abbeydale Road to provide halal, vegetarian and vegan food packages for those in need. The project is the initiative of TSY Ehsaas Outreach in collaboration with Families Relief, iAspire Foundation, One Nation Community Centre and the Sheffield Muslim Community Forum. Disability arts charity adapts to lockdown

Disability arts charity Under the Stars have adapted their work with vulnerable people by embracing online technologies and providing support for home-based activities. The charity supports adults with learning disabilities and has been organising social events and studio-based music, drama and dance workshops in Sheffield for over ten years. Food banks face huge increase in demand

Food banks in Sheffield have been seen a huge increase in demand from families and individuals facing reduced income and delays in processing grants and universal credit. Ben Miskell, councillor for Park and Arbourthorne told Sheffield Live! the S2 Foodbank had experienced a sixfold increase in demand and had distributed 15 tonnes of food in April, while the Spires Centre in Arbourthorne had increased its foodbank service to support over 350 families.
