Social enterprise showcased at city region conference

Social entrepreneurs from across Sheffield City Region came together to mark Social Enterprise Day at a half-day conference and other events in Sheffield. Participants heard from fitness and mental well being start-up Happiness Bootcamp, Sheffield-based digital makers AALFY and Chesterfield Canal Trust, among others involved in enterprises run for social purpose. Lib Dem leader slams clean air zone plan

Liberal Democrats have slammed Sheffield Council’s clean air zone plans which could see high emission vehicles charged up to £50 for driving into the city centre. Sheffield Lib Dem leader, Shafaq Mohammed described the idea as “bonkers.” Council chiefs say the clean air zone would help tackle pollution and save lives and there are no plans to charge private vehicles. Mum appeals for witnesses of hit-and-run fatality

The mother of a woman killed by a hit and run driver in Sheffield last month has made a direct appeal for anyone with information to come forward. Twenty-eight year old Naomi Anna Colcomb was crossing St Mary’s Gate at around 1.50am on Saturday 13th October when she was struck by a grey Fiat Bravo travelling towards Bramall Lane. Sheffield plans vehicle pollution charge

Sheffield could see the introduction of a pollution charge of up to £50 per day within the city centre for buses, taxis, vans, coaches and lorries. There are no plans to charge private vehicles. Sheffield Council say a city centre clean air zone would help tackle pollution and save lives. The local authority is seeking around £40 million from government to pay for signs and cameras needed to enforce the charges. A consultation with residents, businesses, taxi drivers and bus companies is to be held next year to consider the scheme. Churches offer food bank help for Universal Credit claimants

Two Sheffield churches have come together to offer food bank support to those who may fall short during the switch over to the Universal Credit system. Universal Credit is currently being rolled out to benefit claimants across Sheffield. Baby among four killed in Darnall crash after police chase

Three males are in police custody following a car crash on Friday night which left four people dead including two men, a woman and a one-year-old baby. The crash happened at around 8.50pm, when a VW Golf which had been tailed by police hit a people carrier preparing to turn right onto Bannham Road. Baillor Jalloh reports for Sheffield Live!

Council reprieve for Weston Road memorial trees

Sheffield Council has confirmed a U-turn on plans to fell the war memorial trees which line Weston Road, following a campaign by local residents. According to Councillor Lewis Dagnall, 32 trees will now be saved out of the 35 that were earmarked to be cut down as part of the Streets Ahead project to repair roads and improve footpaths across the city. Petition launched to welcome child refugees

A petition to commit Sheffield to welcoming at least ten child refugees per year for the next ten years has been presented to Sheffield Council. The campaign has gained more than 500 signatures including one of the survivors of the Kindertransport rescue effort of World War Two, Sue Pearson, who came from Prague to Sheffield to live with a local family. Social housing exhibition goes on display

An exhibition highlighting grass roots campaigns on housing and homelessness is on display at Union Street co-working space. The week long exhibition, led by Dr Sam Burgum, explores the links between poverty, inequality and housing and looks at how squatting, trespass and direct action campaigns have contributed to awareness and action.
