Football charity boss condemns online racist abuse

Football Unites Racism Divides boss Simon Hyacinth expressed his disappointment after three of England’s players were subjected to racist abuse following the Three Lions’ defeat by Italy in the Euro 2020 final. Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho and Bukayo Saka all missed in the penalty shoot out and were later targetted on social media. England manager Gareth Southgate described the abuse as unforgivable. Many young people still not vaccinated as Covid cases rise

Sheffield’s director of public health, Greg Fell, expressed concern that many young people aged 18 to 40 are yet to book their Covid-19 vaccination as cases rise again in the city and UK wide. Over forty five million adults in the UK have now received their first Covid-19 vaccination does. Thirty three million have received both doses. Azz Mohammed reports for Sheffield Live!

New Blades manager seeks Premiership return

Slavisa Jakanovic spoke to Sheffield Live! following his appointment as Blades manager, taking over from Chris Wilder. After the disappointment of relegation Blades fans will be hoping Jokanovic can take the team back into the Premiership . Azz Mohammed reports.

Sheffield sweet enough

Sheffield Council has launched a campaign to reduce sugar intake and to promote healthy eating. Almost two thirds of Sheffield adults are said to be overweight and one in four children are above a healthy weight when they start school. The amount of tooth decay is also a concern with over 2,000 children from across the city hospitalised for painful tooth extractions in just one year. The campaign includes a guide book on how to cut down sugar as well as recipes for food ideas. Fifty percent of the books printed will be donated to lower-income families in Sheffield whilst the rest will be on sale at retail outlets across the city. New engineering hub launches in Sheffield

Software services provider Tes has launched a new engineering hub in Sheffield to develop products for teachers and schools. Tes already employs over 200 people in the city and expects to add 20 more jobs. The new engineering hub will focus on timetabling tools, classroom management software and a platform for teacher development. Azz Mohammed reports for Sheffield Live!

Beat the Street launches in Sheffield

A national programme to help people get fit and active following the lockdown has arrived in Sheffield. Beat the Street challenges people, schools, workplaces and community groups to see how far they can walk, run, scoot, wheel or cycle in return for points and prizes. It also aims to encourage people to explore their local community anew and discover routes and areas they may not know. The programme is free to take part and open to all ages. Care home workers receive wage boost

Care home staff in Barnsley are to receive a cash boost to their pay after negotiations between Barnsley Independent Care Home Association and the local authority. A new agreement on fee levels will see direct care workers receive a minimum of £1 extra per hour, above the national living wage. Health chiefs urge caution as lockdown eases

As part of the plan to ease out of lockdown, groups of up to six people are now allowed to socialise outdoors in groups of six, but Sheffield health chiefs have urged the public to maintain other precautions. Family launch legacy appeal for Secret Garden project

The family of a man who sadly lost his life to Covid-19 has launched a £100,000 legacy appeal in his memory, one year on from his death. Raj Aggarwal owned the Hackenthorpe branch of Spar, along with other shops across the region and was a well known figure who worked tirelessly to provide food and drink supplies to frontline NHS Workers at the start of the pandemic. His wife Sunita Aggarwal has decided to launch a campaign to raise funds towards the Secret Garden project for staff and patients at the Northern General Hospital for staff and patients. Festival of Debate to go online for a second year

The Festival of Debate has announced some of its big name speakers as it prepares for a second online edition. Speakers lined up include famed economist Yanis Varoufakis, Labour MP David Lammy and writer Maya Goodfellow. Sheffield Live! reporter Azz Mohammed spoke to festival director Joe Kriss.
