Nyara School of Arts has been awarded a £10,000 grant from Sheffield Council to deliver a cultural history project capturing stories of Sheffield’s Windrush Generation. The Sheffield-based African diaspora arts and heritage organisation was unanimously chosen by a panel of community members following an open competition. Sheffield-based youth charity Always An Alternative have deployed a number of knife bins in Sheffield and Barnsley as part of a campaign to reduce knife crime and serious youth violence. Jonathan Trezise, a civil engineer from Sheffield, has run sixty miles in a long distance charity race. Managing to finish ninth out of 13 contestants Jonathan completed the race in 15 hours and 56 minutes. He received an award for oldest contestant and has raised just under £1,000 for his chosen charity, Christian Aid, which will go towards alleviation of suffering in poorer countries. Hundreds of cleaners employed by the University of Sheffield are calling on the university to increase their wages to £10 an hour. Their campaign is being backed by Unite the Union and local MP’s Paul Blomfield, Olivia Blake and Louise Haigh. Palms Row Health Care boss Nicola Richards told Sheffield Live! the government must do more to help care providers as many care workers are leaving the sector. The care firm manages long-established nursing homes in Crookes and Fir Vale. Earlier this week Boris Johnson announced a new health and social care tax expected to raise £36 billion over the next three years to pay for care sector reforms and the NHS. Baillor Jalloh reports.
Extinction Rebellion Sheffield held a memorial event in Sheffield city centre to mourn what they describe as the people, wildlife and plants already killed or harmed by climate change and the inevitable losses still to come. The event was part of a series of local actions to tie in with Extinction Rebellion’s fifth wave of London and national protests. Dore Parish Church Hall is to reopen it’s doors as a community centre following a fundraising campaign that has enabled a major refurbishment. The future was looking uncertain for the church hall in 2019 due to the work required on the building however a planned sale was opposed by local campaigners seeking to preserve the community asset. Activists from South Yorkshire Migration and Asylum Action Group and One Rainbow Bridge Network have called on holiday firm TUI to pull out of a Home Office deal to assist asylum seeker deportation. A public art installation in Ponderosa Park to raise awareness of women’s safety in public spaces has been destroyed by fire. The collaborative artwork installed by campaign group called Our Bodies Our Streets was recently unveiled in collaboration with the University of Sheffield.
