Food charity steps in to support children at risk of hunger during summer holiday

Children’s food charity Magic Breakfast is taking action against holiday hunger by providing thousands of healthy breakfasts to Sheffield school children. The charity, which works across the UK, provides support for children at risk of hunger across 20 schools in Sheffield. Utility price increase could leave families struggling

Clare Lodder, head of Citizens Advice Sheffield, has warned low income families may struggle this winter to pay their energy bills. Energy prices are set to rise in October for millions of UK households following the raising of the price cap by regulator Ofgem to cover suppliers’ increased costs. Sheffield students union rated best for fourth year running

The University of Sheffield has been awarded the What Uni student choice award for best students union for the fourth consecutive year. Over 41,000 student reviews from across the UK are taken into account for the award with the the union praised for its cinema, shops, study areas, a wide range of food outlets and excellent student activities. Sheffield activists remember Hiroshima victims

Vigils have been held at the weekend to mark Hiroshima Day, the 76th anniversary of the dropping of an atomic bomb on the city of Hiroshima. Over 150,000 people died, with and many more suffering generational defects that continue to this day. Baillor Jalloh reports for Sheffield Live!

South Yorkshire charity wins Queens Award

Doncaster-based Sleep Charity has been presented with the Queens Award, one of the highest voluntary sector accolades. The charity has been recognised for its specialist services to address sleeping issues for parents and professionals. Students welcome Covid vaccine discounts

Taxi hailing apps and food delivery companies are to offer discounted rides and meals for customers who get a COVID-19 jab. Avimule Sibanda, a Sheffield Hallam University student said it was welcome news and would boost vaccine uptake among students and young people. Uber, Bolt, Deliveroo and Pizza Pilgrims are among companies who will be giving out incentives. Baillor Jalloh reports for Sheffield Live!

Safer roads group urge more caution from drivers

South Yorkshire Safer Roads Partnership is urging road users to be cautious and “do the right thing” when it comes to speed. The campaign group has joined forces with South Yorkshire Police to raise awareness about the dangers of speeding. Nationally, excess speed is a contributory factor in one in three fatal road collisions. “The Slow Down Save Lives” campaign aims to remind people of the risks and consequences of speeding and encourage them to stick to the limit and travel to the conditions of the road. Activists demand end to bus privatisation

Environmental activists and trade unionists gathered outside Sheffield Town hall with a call to bring buses back into public ownership. The demonstration was organised by the Sheffield Climate Campaign Umbrella Group COP26 Coalition. Fran Posthlethwaite from Better Buses for South Yorkshire campaign group said the buses are “in crisis and fare prices have gone through the roof”. Baillor Jalloh reports for Sheffield Live!

Union calls for further support for UK steel firms

Following the nationalisation of Sheffield Forgemasters, Unite are calling on government to consider nationalising other steel firms. Sheffield Forgemasters was bought out this week by the Ministry of Defence to secure production of defence critical components.
