Sheffield’s long awaited tram train finally began running only to be derailed on its first day of service after a crash with a lorry on Staniforth Road. The service was due to launch two years ago but has faced delays and cost overruns from an initial estimate of £15 million to a final bill of £75 million. Services were suspended after the incident. United States aircraft manufacturer Boeing has officially opened in Catcliffe, Rotherham its first European parts factory. The £40 million Boeing plant has created 52 full time jobs and 25 apprentices. Baillor Jalloh reports for Sheffield Live!
Sheffield City Council have reversed plans to fell some of 300 trees originally earmarked for replacement and to phase in the work on others. The decision has come after several mediation meetings between council officials and tree campaigners. A documentary film narrating the struggle of Palestinians under Israeli occupation has had its first UK screening at a launch event held at Sheffield Hallam University Students’ Union. Behind the Frontlines tells the story of Dr Samah Jabr, head of mental health services in the West Bank, and her work with traumatised children. The film exposes the psychological strains and consequences of the Israeli occupation and how Palestinians have learned to cope. Baillor Jalloh reports for Sheffield Live!
Dozens of anti-immigration campaigners travelled from Sheffield to the Morton Hall Immigration Removal Centre in Lincolnshire to protest against what they described as the cruel and inhumane treatment of asylum seekers. Totley Primary School has officially opened its extended school buildings following a £2.1 million expansion project that has created an additional 60 places for children from the local area. A memorial plaque for late Tramlines Festival Director, Sarah Nulty, has been unveiled this week on Devonshire Green by the Lord Mayor of Sheffield Magid Magid and Tramlines Operations Director Timm Cleasby. The Tramlines Festival was first held on Devonshire Green in 2009. Sarah died earlier this year at the age of 36 a few weeks before the tenth edition of the summer music festival. Sheffield’s Crucible Theatre is preparing to host the city’s first Spirit of Africa Festival over the weekend of 26 to 27 October. As part of National Adoption Week, Sheffield Council is asking more people to come forward to help change the lives of children across the city by adopting a child. Last year 39 children were adopted in Sheffield and 25 children are currently looking for an adoptive family. Baillor Jalloh reports for Sheffield Live!
Landlords in London Road, Abbeydale Road and Chesterfield Road have just two weeks left to apply for a property rental licence or face possible fines and prosecution. The new Selective Licensing scheme for the area comes into effect from 1 November 2018 and means landlords must have a licence for every private rented property they control.
