Food project feeds dozens over Christmas holiday

Sheffield’s award-winning Foodhall Project has been feeding dozens of vulnerable people over the Christmas holiday. Since the coronavirus pandemic begun, the project has helped over 13,000 people, providing emergency food parcels and a place of comfort for those who are isolated. A57 congestion fears with Mottram bypass plan

Sheffield Green Party have expressed fears of increased traffic on the A57 Snake Pass route between Sheffield and Manchester that could result from plans for the Mottram bypass to the east of Glossop. The plan could lead to more traffic through Broomhill and Malin Bridge to and from the A57 route over the Pennines. Former MEP reacts to Brexit deal

Following news of the Brexit deal with the European Union, Sheffield Live! spoke to former Yorkshire and Humber MEP and Sheffield Councillor Shaffaq Mohammed. The UK-EU agreement is to come into effect on 1 January 2021 after the end of the Brexit transition period. The 2000 page document will require ratification by the 27 European Union countries and by the UK Parliament. Azz Mohammed reports.

Residents call for more officers after shop ram raid

Local residents in Jordanthorpe have called on South Yorkshire police to send more patrol officers in the area after a van ram raided a food and wine shop in the early hours of Monday morning stealing a cash till and cigarettes. The call comes after a similar incident happened last week in which another shop was targeted. Baillor Jalloh reports for Sheffield Live!

Local councillor pays tribute to outgoing Sheffield leader

Councillor Mazher Igbal, the cabinet member for Business at Sheffield City Council has paid tribute to outgoing leader Cllr Julie Dore who announced she was stepping down at then end of this month after nine years in the job. Earlier this week Cllr Bob Johnson was announced as the new leader of the Sheffield Labour party and will replace Julie Dore as the new leader in January.

Employment expert welcomes furlough extension

Shaun Duffy, an employment expert at Sheffield’s Citizen Advice has told Sheffield Live! the extension of the furlough scheme is good news for employers in the region. Two weeks ago, the Prime Minister announced the second national lockdown in England and the extension of the furlough scheme for another five months. Under the scheme employers can claim up to 80% of their employees wages or a maximum of £2500 a month from the government. This also applies to those who are self-employed. Baillor Jalloh reports.

Sheffield could return to tier 3 after lockdown says health chief

Sheffield’s director of public health, Greg Fell, speaking to Sheffield Live! said he believes the city will go back into Tier 3 restrictions when the current lockdown ends. Under the new national lockdown, which came into effect on 5 November, pubs, restaurants, gyms and non essential shops are due to remain closed until 2 December. Azz Mohammed reports.

Sheffield protesters condemn police killings in Nigeria

Protesters gathered outside Sheffield Town Hall to show solidarity with victims of police brutality in Nigeria following the killing by security forces of at least 12 civilians engaged in a peaceful demonstration in the capital Lagos. The killings followed weeks of demonstrations in Nigeria against the activities of a police unit known as the Special Anti Robbery Squad or SARS which has been accused of kidnappings and harassment. Sheffield Live! reporter Azz Mohamed spoke to organiser Leo Nosakhare.

South Yorkshire heads into Tier 3 restrictions

Sheffield and the rest of South Yorkshire are heading into Tier 3 restrictions as Covid-19 cases remain persistently high. People will not be allowed to meet socially with anyone who is not part of their household or support bubble. The government has allocated £41m to support those affected in South Yorkshire by the new restrictions.
