Sheffield’s public health boss Greg Fell is urging residents to maintain hygiene and other Covid safety measures as more research is awaited on the Omicron variant. The UK Health Security Agency confirmed this week more cases of the variant in England. The individuals who have tested positive are not connected to one another or to previously confirmed cases. Sheffield’s Bryony Page has added her name to the history books once again by becoming the first British female trampoline gymnast to win a World Championships gold medal since Sue Shotton in 1984. Thirty year old Page won the individual gold at the Trampolining Gymnastics World Championships in Baku, Azerbaijan. The medal adds to her team gold from 2013 and silver and bronze Olympic medals from Rio 2016 and Tokyo 2020. Shahid Ali, coach for Allama Iqbal Cricket Club, told Sheffield Live! he is not surprised with the allegations of racism at Yorkshire Cricket Club but urges people to be cautious as investigations continue. His comment came as over 35 people have contacted Yorkshire Cricket Club’s whistle-blowing hotline since it was launched just a week ago. Sheffield rail travellers spoke to Sheffield Live! following the government decision to axe the eastern leg of HS2. The plan to connect leeds and Manchester to the the HS2 network are to be replaced with the Integrated Rail Plan (IRP) which promises faster train journeys between the East and West Midlands, Yorkshire and the North West, with £96bn expected to be invested into the upgraded rail network. Live and in person graduation ceremonies have been taking place at Sheffield two universities for the first time since the Covid pandemic struck 18 months ago. Dozens of Sudanese residents of Sheffield gathered outside the City Hall at the weekend to protest the military coup which has ended the country’s transitional civilian goverment. The protest was organised in solidarity with nationwide protests in Sudan and similar gatherings in other parts of the world.
