Liberal Democrats seek coalition with Greens

Liberal Democrats leader for Sheffield councillor Shaffaq Mohammed has offered a coalition agreement with the Green Party following the local election result leaving no party with overall control. The Green Party is expected to decide in the coming days whether to continue a coalition with Labour or to join forces with the Liberal Democrats. Azz Mohammed reports for Sheffield Live!

 

Busk Aid returns to Sheffield city centre

A group of musicians will perform live on Sheffield streets on Saturday as part of Busk Aid where all donations go towards humanitarian aid around the world. It’s the first time the team will perform live since lockdown when the yearly event had to go virtual. Sheffield Live! reporter Azz Mohammed spoke to Alison Trezise, chair of Sheffield Christian Aid Committee and Yo Tozerloft, a volunteer at Busk Aid.

Plans unveiled for new public space in Rotherham

Rotherham Council has unveiled plans for Riverside Gardens, a new public space that will form a key gateway to the flagship Forge Island leisure development and wider town centre. The proposals include an eight screen cinema and a hotel as well as bars and restaurants together with additional green spaces and play areas with connections to the river and nature. Charity recycles prosthetic legs

Legs 4 Africa charity has been on a round trip to sub Saharan Africa delivering prosthetic legs for those in need. Sheffield is one of the hubs for the collection of prosthetic legs for recyling to Africans in need, with some 600 collected from across the country in the charities latest call for donatons. Trib3 Sheffield communty raise £100k for charity

Trib3 Sheffield held a half marathon on Sunday among other community events raising over £100,000 for St Lukes Hospice. The charity supports 1,900 people with terminal illnesses every year, offering services to families and people that are dealing with life-threatening illnesses. The money raised is the largest received in a single fundraising initiative. Sheffield Live! reporter Azz Mohammed spoke to Paul Simpson, manager at Trib3 Sheffield.

Sheffield family deliver aid to Ukrainian border

A Sheffield aid worker with family in Ukraine is calling for more donations as the war continues to devastate the country and the number of refugees rises. Nazar Senechyn spoke to Sheffield Live! after returning from delivering aid to the border with Poland. He is planning a further mission to carry medical kits, baby and children’s clothing and other supplies. Nazar has set up a Gofundme fundraising page to support the initiative. Azz Mohammed reports.

Covid cases on the rise as free testing ends

Covid-19 cases in Sheffield have seen a rapid rise in recent weeks with health chief’s urging caution following the end of lockdown restrictions and free testing. Ruth Granger, health protection manager for Pubic Health Sheffield told Sheffield Live! people should to continue to isolate if they have Covid symptoms or test positive. Azz Mohammed reports.

Environmental activists protest Amazon destruction

Activists from Greenpeace mounted a protest outside Sheffield supermarkets to draw attention to deforestation of the Amazon for meat production. Campaigners are targeting meat suppliers JBS and others and are calling for half the meat on sale to be replaced with plant-based alternatives by 2025. A national petition has gathered more than 250,000 signatures. Sheffield Live! reporter Azz Mohammed spoke to Richard Teasdale and Dawn Spier of Sheffield Greenpeace.

Rugby trophies on display in Sheffield

With 200 days to go until the opening game of Rugby League World Cup, a 48 hour tour put the trophies on show in Sheffield and other host cities and towns. Many turned out for the event at Sheffield Peace Gardens where the men’s, women’s and wheelchair rugby trophies were on display.
