Amateur Cahill stuns world number one in Crucible opener

Ronnie O’Sullivan has been knocked out of the World Snooker Championship by amateur player James Cahill. The 23 year-old from Blackpool is the first non-professional player to qualify for the Crucible and he beat the world number one by 10 frames to 8. Sheffield host England v Scotland dodgeball meet

The newly created British Dodgeball Home Nations League brought its third league fixture to All Saints Sports Centre, Norfolk Park Road, for the meet between England and Scotland dodgeball teams. The Home Nations League was launched in January by British Dodgeball, the national governing body for dodgeball in the UK with the aim to raise awareness and to provide more opportunities for high performance players to develop in the fast growing team sport.

Future in doubt for U-Mix youth centre

Funding cuts have put the future of the groundbreaking U-Mix youth and community centre in doubt as talks between Sheffield Council and the charity Football Unites Racism Divides reach a critical stage. The £2.5m centre was opened in 2013, in Lowfield, under the management of FURD, and with grants from the Football Foundation and the government’s My Place initiative through the Big Lottery Fund. Climbing festival returns to Sheffield

The Rab Climbing Works International Festival returned to Sheffield at the weekend with more than 400 competitors taking part in the two day event. Many are hoping to qualify for the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games where sport climbing will make its debut. Baillor Jalloh reports for Sheffield Live!

Jessica Ennis-Hill launches sports education programme

Olympic gold medallist, Dame Jessica Ennis-Hill, has launched a new sports education programme to fast track 16-18 year olds into sporting careers. The Institute of Sporting Futures will be open from September 2019 at schools and colleges in Sheffield, Hull and Leeds. The scheme will offer a UCAS recognised Level 3 Diploma in sport and physical activities as an alternative to A Levels and will include three days a week in a sports-based work placement. Sheffield prepares for UK Invictus Games Trials

Defence Secretary Gavin Williamson joined athletes at a launch event for the UK Invictus Games Trials which are set to take place in Sheffield in July. The UK event, a preparation for the international Invictus Games 2019 to be held in The Hague later in the year, will be the first ever national games for Biritish wounded, injured and sick armed services personnel and veterans. The trials will involve up to 500 athletes using the power of sport, teamwork and competition to accelerate their recovery including athletics, wheelchair basketball, powerlifting, swimming and sitting volleyball. Special Olympics GB prepare for Abu Dhabi World Games

Dozens of athletes were in Sheffield at the weekend in training for the Special Olympics World Games 2019 to be held in Abu Dhabi in March. More than 7,000 athletes from over 170 countries will be competing, with Special Olympics GB hoping for a haul of medals. Kell Brook fight could be last in Sheffield

Former IBF welterweight title holder, Kell Brook, is to take on Australian Michael Zerafa at the Sheffield Arena in what Brook says could be his last fight in the city. The 32 year old Sheffield boxer, once ranked as the worlds best active welterweight, is looking to return to elite competition and will be seeking a quick win. Sheffield Live! reporter Azz Mohamed spoke to Brook’s visiting opponent, Michael Zerafa, as he prepared for the Saturday bout.
