Sheffield to host 2021 European Championship football

Sheffield and Rotherham have been confirmed among the locations to host football matches for the UEFA 2021 Women’s European Championships. Sheffield United’s Bramall Lane stadium as well as Rotherham’s New York stadium will stage games in the prestigious continental championship featuring teams from 16 countries. The championship will be played at eight venues across the country before heading to the final at Wembley. The bid to stage the tournament was submitted by the Football Association as part of its ‘Gameplan for Growth’ strategy which supports the development of women’s football. GB wheelchair basketball recognised in Hall of Champions

The GB men’s wheelchair basketball team have been inducted into the Hall of Champions at the English Institute of Sport in recognition of their 2018 World Championships win in Hamburg. The team profile joins the likes of Anthony Joshua and Jessica Ennis in the Hall of Champions gallery. Its the first time the team has won the World Championship trophy and they are one of the youngest teams in the world with an average age of 27. Festival of sport brings communities together

More than 80 young people from across Sheffield joined a festival of sport at the weekend bringing together some of the city’s most disadvantaged communities. The event, a collaboration between several city-wide organisations and hosted at Sheffield University’s Goodwin Centre, featured a 5-aside football tournament, BMXing, grafitti workshops and film-making. The multi-sport festival was designed to give young people a chance to learn new skills and to improve links between communities. Baillor Jalloh reports for Sheffield Live!

Sheffield boccia athlete celebrates olympics gold

Sheffield boccia athlete and radio presenter, Sam Hindley, has returned from the Special Olympics GB 40th Anniversary Games with both a gold and a silver medal. The games held at the University of Stirling, Scotland, has been the biggest sporting event of the year for people with intellectual disabilities and also marks the 50th anniversary of the worldwide Special Olympics movement. Youdan Trophy football tournament underway

The Youdan Trophy has launched its fourth international youth football tournament in Sheffield with local and UK under 14s and under 16s academy teams competing with international visitors from Ireland, the USA and Oman.
