Bus service cuts prompt public ownership call

Passengers’ anger at bus service reductions in Walkley and Hillsborough has led to calls for bus services to be returned to the control of local authorities. Hillsborough councillor George Lindars-Hammond told Sheffield Live! that rising fares and cuts in services were unacceptable and that the private companies responsible should be brought into public ownership. Youth funding cuts linked to knife crime

A Sheffield youth worker has claimed cuts in funding for young people has contributed to the recent spike in knife crime in Sheffield. Saeed Brasab, founder of Unity Gym which aims to help young people to stay away from crime, told Sheffield Live! he would like to see more opportunities to engage young people in dialogue and learning new skills. Festival of sport brings communities together

More than 80 young people from across Sheffield joined a festival of sport at the weekend bringing together some of the city’s most disadvantaged communities. The event, a collaboration between several city-wide organisations and hosted at Sheffield University’s Goodwin Centre, featured a 5-aside football tournament, BMXing, grafitti workshops and film-making. Petition launched to change council decision-making

A petition to open up council decision making has been launched by local democracy campaigners at a gathering hosted at Sheffield Town Hall by Lord Mayor of Sheffield Majid Majid. The campaign, under the banner “It’s Our City” seeks to replace Sheffield Council’s “strong leader” model of cabinet decision making with a new committee system. Sheffield boccia athlete celebrates olympics gold

Sheffield boccia athlete and radio presenter, Sam Hindley, has returned from the Special Olympics GB 40th Anniversary Games with both a gold and a silver medal. The games held at the University of Stirling, Scotland, has been the biggest sporting event of the year for people with intellectual disabilities and also marks the 50th anniversary of the worldwide Special Olympics movement. Animal rights protest against greyhound racing

Animal rights activists mounted a protest outside Owlerton Stadium in Hillsborough to call for an end to greyhound racing. Organisers of the demonstration said the group were seeking to raise awareness of the mistreatment of greyhounds in the sport including the disappearance or killing of thousands of dogs every year. Barry Chuckle funeral held at Rotherham United

The funeral of Barry Chuckle has been held at Rotherham United Football Club. While family members were at the ceremony, fans gathered outside the stadium to show support for the comedy legend. Paul Chuckle described his brother as his best friend and cried as fans shouted the famous catchphrase ‘to me to you’. Barry Chuckle died on 5th August aged 73 after a short illness. WorkingWin health-led employment scheme launched

A health-led employment trial called ‘WorkingWin’, and running across South Yorkshire and Bassetlaw, held its official launch event with already over 1,000 people referred. The trial aims to provided supported assistance to help people back to work. The launch event was attended by Dan Jarvis, Sheffield City Region mayor, and Sarah Newton, minister for disabled people, health and work. Azz Mohammed reports for Sheffield Live!
