The Leadmill music venue has been granted £240,000 from the government Cultural Recovery Fund to cope with the impact of the coronavirus pandemic. The grant is part of the £1.57bn government handout designed to help arts organisations survive losses caused by the lockdown. A group of local and community media organisations have come together with an ambitious plan to expand choice for radio listeners tuning to digital radio in Sheffield and Rotherham. Community radio stations Link FM and Sheffield Live! have joined forces with Sheffield Community Media to establish a new digital audio broadcasting network. The joint venture, Shefcast Digital, has been set up to operate as a social enterprise. Baillor Jalloh reports.
Sheffield Tramlines festival has teamed up with Leadmill, Jon McClure and others to raise money for Sheffield causes on what would have been the weekend of Tramlines festival 2020. The event featured a host of online activities from pub quizzes to charity raffles as well as the music. All money raised is to go to Sheffield causes including Roundabout, Sheffield S6 Food Bank, Disability Sheffield, iForge and Cavendish Cancer Care. The UK’s premier synthesizer festival, SynthFest, has returned to Sheffield for its fourth year with over 1000 delegates attending exhibitions, workshops and performance at the Octagon Centre. South Yorkshire Police have appealed for information to help find 23 year old Minod Monger, last seen at around 5.30pm on 10 June in the Ecclesfield area of Sheffield. His family are extremely worried about his welfare. He is described as being Asian with dark black hair and around 5ft 4in tall. He was last seen wearing a white jacket, grey joggers and black Crocs. South Yorkshire Police are set to share with other police forces across the country an additional £100m of government funding to help deal with the surge in knife crime. The cash is to be used for police overtime and to fund new ‘Violent Crime Reduction Units’. South Yorkshire Police have been running a campaign this week to raise awareness about knife crime and to reduce the numbe of weapons on the streets. A new Sheffield-based charity aiming to get vulnerable young people into work is set to launch in February after a pilot scheme supported by local businesses and volunteers. Grow UK aims to nurture skills to support vulnerable young adults to succeed in the workplace through a programme of coaching, one-to-one support and practical work experience. Broomhill Library have received a grant from the Big Lottery for improvements to the Victorian building and to restore its long-abandoned Percy Cain Heritage Garden. The building on Taptonville Road was privately owned before being converted to a library in 1957. Since 2014 it has been run by volunteers who are hoping it can be developed as a community hub. The opening event for Nether Edge Festival 2018 was held at the Common Ground Community Centre with music, dance, face-painting, arts and crafts activities. The festival, into its fourth year and taking place at various venues in Nether Edge, runs until 23 September. Baillor Jalloh reports fo Sheffield Live!
The Age Better in Sheffield campaign, led by South Yorkshire Housing Association, is seeking to reduce isolation and loneliness among over 50s with a toolkit going out initially to 7,000 households in the Firth Park area. The kits are designed to encourage people to connect with one another, especially those who may feel isolated, and include information about activities and facilities as well as advice.
