Little bird stories catch early bookworms

Bookstart Week, the national early reading campaign, has launched in Sheffield with a bird-themed day of fun at Weston Park Museum. The family event, organised by Sheffield Libraries, is part of a week of activities for children, schools and parents. Azz Mohammed reports for Sheffield Live!

Knife campaign launched in Sheffield schools

A group of young Sheffield men are set to visit schools across the city in a campaign to cut down on knife crime. 20 year old Lewis Pask, pro boxer Luke Junior and their friends have devised the “Drop the Knife” campaign to raise awareness of knife crime and its dangers. The initiative comes just a week after two teenagers were stabbed to death in different neighbourhoods. Baillor Jalloh reports for Sheffield Live!

RIBA award for Sheffield architects

The refurbished Albert Works building on Sidney Street is one of seven buildings recognised in the Royal Institution of British Architects (RIBA) Yorkshire Awards. The design by Cartwright Pickard Architects converted four traditional red brick industrial warehouses into a modern workspace for creative digital marketing company Jaywing. Dinosaurs descend on Norfolk Heritage Park

A travelling exhibition of animatronic dinosaurs have arrived at Norfolk Heritage Park and look set to be a roaring success. Over a thousand attended the opening day of the family oriented event. Organised by Jurassic Kingdom the dinosaurs will be roaming the park until 10 June with tickets available online and on the door. Baillor Jalloh reports for Sheffield Live!

Consultation opens on 10 year plan for Sheffield city centre

Sheffielders are being encouraged to have their say on plans for the future of the city set out in a new 2018-2028 Sheffield City Centre Plan. The plan, titled ‘This is Sheffield’, is intended to guide future regeneration including residential, business, leisure and the outdoor environment. Exhibitions are planned to be held in the Winter Gardens and the Moor Market over the next fortnight alongside an online survey and consultation. Metalwork sign-off marks new school milestone

The new £25m Astrea Academy Sheffield has reached a milestone with completion of the steel work structure for the all through academy school due to open in Burngreave in September. A signing off event at the site of the former Pye Bank Board School was attended by parents, pupils and teachers as well as Sheffield Council representatives. Sheffield Live reporter Azz Mohammed spoke to Jackie Drayton, Sheffield Council cabinet member for children, young people and families and Kim Walton, Astrea Academy principal.

Sheffield submits bid to host Channel 4 HQ

Sheffield’s pitch to host a new national headquarters for Channel 4 has been submitted with the support of Sheffield Council, South Yorkshire regional mayor, Dan Jarvis, and local filmakers and educational institutions. With the message “If Channel 4 was a city it would be Sheffield” the bid document sets out the city’s offer including potential city centre locations and opportunities to engage with and develop the region’s filmmaking talent. Cities across the UK are competing to host the new national headquarters or one of two new Creative Hubs as part of Channel 4 plans to increase its profile and expenditure outside of London. Scramble for gold as Arctics release new album

Sheffield fans of the Arctic Monkeys queued from the early hours at a city centre pop-up store to get their hands on one of just 2044 exclusive gold vinyl pressings of the band’s sixth album to be released in Sheffield. The new album, titled Tranquility Base Hotel and Casino, is the first in six years from the Sheffield indie rock band after their 2013 album, AM, which sold around five million copies worldwide.
