Early support for children hit by council spending cuts

A new report has revealed more vulnerable children than ever need crisis support as local authorities cut spending on services which help prevent them coming to harm. According to the report, investment in early intervention support by councils in England fell from £3.8bn to £1.9bn (50%) between 2010/11 and 2020/21. The report was commissioned by The Children’s Society, Action for Children, Barnardo’s, National Children’s Bureau and the NSPCC. Heatwave breaks records in Sheffield and across the UK

South Yorkshire and other parts of the UK recorded temperatures of over 40C (104F) for the first time since records began. Thermometers hit 40.3C in many parts of South Yorkshire, well above the previous high of 38.7C in 2019. Sheffield’s Supertram network was shut for the day due to the extreme heat conditions. Race equality commission calls for action to tackle racism

The report of the Independent Commission into Racism and Racial Disparities in Sheffield sets out a series of recommendations and actions for Sheffield to become an anti-racist city. The report of the commission follows two years of consultations, addressing a wide range of issues and calls for key organisations in Sheffield to come together around a comprehensive plan of action. Sheffield Councillor: Tory leadership needs fresh ideas

Lewis Chinchen, the Conservative Councillor for Stocksbridge and Upper Don has told Sheffield Live! his party needs a fresh start. His comments comes as candidates hoping to replace Boris Johnson as the next leader of the Tory party and Prime Minster of the UK unveil their plans. Meanwhile, the chair of the 1922 Committee, Sir Graham Brady has announced that eight contenders will go into the first round of voting by Conservative MPs – Kemi Badenoch, Suella Braverman, Jeremy Hunt, Penny Mordaunt, Rishi Sunak, Liz Truss, Tom Tugendhat and Nadhim Zahawi. Sheffield Muslims celebrate Eid al-Adha

Muslim communities across South Yorkshire took part in the celebration of Eid al-Adha over the weekend. The festival is marked by special prayers and feasts and follows Eid al-Fitr which marks the end of Ramadan, the Muslim holy month of fasting. In Sheffield prayers were performed in parks and mosques across the city. Wahid Nazir, a committee member at Ghausia Mosque on Firth Park Road, spoke to Sheffield Live! reporter Baillor Jalloh.

Police campaign targets van drivers on road safety

A new campaign has been launched by South Yorkshire Police in partnership with South Yorkshire Safer Roads Partnership urging van drivers to ensure their vehicles are roadworthy. The campaign reminds drivers and businesses about the importance of having a properly maintained and correctly loaded vehicle. A video is to also circulate online from next week. Barnsley Council to open a women refuge centre

Barnsley Council has announced a new day support refuge for women in abusive relationships is to be established in the town to support victims. A report warned that the number of referrals has been increasing and cases were also rising among male victims. Sheffield motorists struggle with fuel price hike

The cost of filling an average family car with petrol has reached £100 as fuel prices continue to rise. Soaring fuel prices have been driven by the war in Ukraine and moves to reduce Europe’s dependence on Russian oil. The RAC motoring has said the cost of filling a 55-litre tank with petrol reached £100 this month and £103.43 for diesel. Baillor Jalloh reports for Sheffield Live!

Fitness charity receives £100k mystery bequest

A Sheffield fitness charity has been rescued after a mysterious benefactor left the organisation £100,000 in his will. Age Active, which holds fitness classes for people over 50 in the city centre, was left the money by the unknown benefactor, part of a £1.1m payout to 11 organisations which received donations. Dozens join rally in solidarity with rail workers

For a third time this week, rail passengers have faced widespread disruption and cancellations as Britain’s biggest nationwide rail strike for three decades continued at the weekend. Workers responsible for train lines and infrastructure across the UK walked out on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday over a pay dispute and compulsory redundancies. The government and Network Rail have said changes are needed to modernise the rail network. On Saturday dozens of people attended a rally outside Sheffield’s East Midland train station to stand in solidarity with the RMT union workers. Baillor Jalloh reports for Sheffield Live!
