The family of a man who sadly lost his life to Covid-19 has launched a £100,000 legacy appeal in his memory, one year on from his death. Raj Aggarwal owned the Hackenthorpe branch of Spar, along with other shops across the region and was a well known figure who worked tirelessly to provide food and drink supplies to frontline NHS Workers at the start of the pandemic. His wife Sunita Aggarwal has decided to launch a campaign to raise funds towards the Secret Garden project for staff and patients at the Northern General Hospital for staff and patients. Greg Fell, Sheffield’s director of public health has urged families with school children to follow Covid-19 advice and issued a reminder that mixing households outside of a controlled environment is not permitted. A pop-up vaccination centre was held at the Jamia Ghaussia Mosque in Sheffield in memory of former mosque chairman and father of five Haji Ahmed Mahmood. The mosque leader helped to set up the vaccination clinic but died from Covid-19 before he was able to receive the life-saving jab. Sheffield Live! spoke to Kashmir Malik, trustee of the Jamia Ghausia Mosque, Dr Jennie Joyce, a GP and clinical lead for Foundry Primary Care Network and Rachel Smith, headteacher at Firvale Academy. A mosque in Page Hall has been used by the NHS to host a pop-up Covid vaccine clinic. Dozens of eligible residents including the over 70s, people who are shielding and some health and care workers were inoculated at the Jamia Ghausia centre on Firth Park Road. A mass vaccination centre has been opened at Sheffield Arena, one of 30 new large scale NHS vaccination centres to enable thousands more people to be inoculated for protection against the coronavirus. The new centres are part of the plan to ramp up vaccinations with a priority for all those who are over 70 or clinically vulnerable. Public health workers in Sheffield are seeking input into the design of new services to support people with disabilities and their careers. Ruth Granger, health protection manager at Sheffield Council told Sheffield Live! the city’s vaccination program is proceeding to plan. Her comments came after the programme was extended to people over 70 and those listed as “clinically extremely vulnerable”. Baillor Jalloh reports.

Doncaster and Bassetlaw Teaching Hospitals is appealing for volunteers to help keep patients in touch with relatives unable to visit due to the national lockdown. The trust, which runs Doncaster Royal Infirmary, Bassetlaw Hospital and Mexborough Montagu, is appealing for people to take on the ‘communication volunteer’ role to help patients to video call their loved ones and to provide updates on a patient’s care to their relatives. Imam Sheik Sadaqat Hussain, who preaches at Madina Mosque in Wolseley Road, has advised Sheffield Muslims to take up the Covid-19 vaccine. His comments follow approval by the British Islamic Medical Association (BIMA) of use of Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine by Muslims in the UK. According to a BIMA statement the organisation consulted experts in infectious diseases, the pharmaceutical industry and public health before recommending the use of the vaccine. An adult day care centre in Sheffield has called on the government to provide a weekly Covid test for all staff members who look after vulnerable adults. Paces Sheffield provides adult day care support for people with brain injuries and motor disorders. Speaking to Sheffield Live! chief executive Spencer Pitfield said: “A lack of regular Covid testing is putting workers and people they care for at risk”. Baillor Jalloh reports.
