A bird crime report has revealed 85 confirmed incidents of bird of prey persecution in the UK in 2019 including shooting, trapping and poisoning, with Yorkshire ranking as one of the worst affected regions. The Royal Society for the Protection of Birds claim the law has failed birds of prey and is calling for urgent government action to end bird of prey killing and ensure grouse shooting operates legally and sustainably. Sheffield Hallam University has moved most of its teaching online, student union president, Andrew Adegbola, has told Sheffield Live! Earlier this week the University of Sheffield suspended all face to face teaching in an attempt to stop the spread of Covid-19 among students and staff. Following the resignation of the Dean of Sheffield, members of the cathedral’s former choir group have said they hope for new dialogue. Peter Bradley resigned earlier this week 17 years after taking up the post and citing “tremendous pressure” seriously affecting his health. A group of local and community media organisations have come together with an ambitious plan to expand choice for radio listeners tuning to digital radio in Sheffield and Rotherham. Community radio stations Link FM and Sheffield Live! have joined forces with Sheffield Community Media to establish a new digital audio broadcasting network. Ahead of the flu season health charity Action on Smoking and Health (ASH) is to launch its Stoptober campaign to encourage people to quit smoking. The October campaign will remind smokers that now more than ever is a good time for smokers to put their lungs first, quit smoking and breathe easier. Data from the UCL Smoking Toolkit Study show that in 2020 in England there has been a surge in smokers trying to quit and a big increase in success rates for those who try. Pub landlords in Sheffield are worried their businesses will not survive if the early closing restrictions continue for long. Last week the government ordered all pubs, bars and restaurants to shut at 10pm in an effort to reduce the spread of the coronavirus.
