Public, health, housing and charity executives have been meeting at the New York Stadium in Rotherham to discuss and tackle the widespread issue of homelessness. The Odeon cinema on Arundel Gate is to re-open after an extensive upgrade that will reduce the capacity but provide more space for cinema goers. Social entrepreneurs from across Sheffield City Region came together to mark Social Enterprise Day at a half-day conference and other events in Sheffield. Liberal Democrats have slammed Sheffield Council’s clean air zone plans which could see high emission vehicles charged up to £50 for driving into the city centre. Sheffield Lib Dem leader, Shafaq Mohammed described the idea as “bonkers.” Council chiefs say the clean air zone would help tackle pollution and save lives and there are no plans to charge private vehicles. The mother of a woman killed by a hit and run driver in Sheffield last month has made a direct appeal for anyone with information to come forward. Twenty-eight year old Naomi Anna Colcomb was crossing St Mary’s Gate at around 1.50am on Saturday 13th October when she was struck by a grey Fiat Bravo travelling towards Bramall Lane. Sheffield could see the introduction of a pollution charge of up to £50 per day within the city centre for buses, taxis, vans, coaches and lorries. There are no plans to charge private vehicles. Sheffield Council say a city centre clean air zone would help tackle pollution and save lives. The local authority is seeking around £40 million from government to pay for signs and cameras needed to enforce the charges. A consultation with residents, businesses, taxi drivers and bus companies is to be held next year to consider the scheme. Two Sheffield churches have come together to offer food bank support to those who may fall short during the switch over to the Universal Credit system. Three males are in police custody following a car crash on Friday night which left four people dead including two men, a woman and a one-year-old baby.
