Campaigners call to revoke lap dancing licence

Campaigners have handed a petition to Sheffield Council demanding the local authority immediately revoke the licence for the city’s only lap dancing club, Spearmint Rhino on Brown Street. The petitioners say private investigators found that “no touching rules” were not enforced, which would place the venue in breach of its sexual entertainment licence. Responding to the claims the club said: “Spearmint Rhino imposes strict rules at all of our establishments to ensure they comply with the regulations which govern our premises. Immigration removal centres under scrutiny

Immigration rights campaigners have welcomed a report by MPs on the Home Affairs committee which recommends an end to indefinite detention and better protection for vulnerable detainees such as those who have experienced torture. The cross party parliamentary group said the Home Office has “utterly failed to ensure the safety of people detained in immigration detention centres across the UK”. Sheffield charity marks Down Syndrome day

Sheffield Mencap and Gateway joined the World Down Syndrome Day campaign to raise awareness of the rights and challenges of people living with Down Syndrome. Council apology over Welsh flag row

Sheffield Council have apologised to the city’s Irish community after mistakenly hoisting the Welsh Red Dragon flag over the Town Hall to mark St Patrick’s Day. Sheffield girl’s WW1 poem adapted for stage

An award winning poem about World War One, written by Sheffield student Molly Meleady-Hanley when she was 11 years old, has been adapted as a play and performed at Sheffield’s Crucible Theatre. Sheffield anti-racism campaigners join global solidarity march

Members of Sheffield Stand Up to Racism campaign were among thousands joining the TUC backed World Against Racism march in London on Saturday. The demonstration was organised to mark UN International Day Against Racism, which takes place on 21 March, and is part of a global campaign held in cities across the world. Sheffield host England v Scotland dodgeball meet

The newly created British Dodgeball Home Nations League brought its third league fixture to All Saints Sports Centre, Norfolk Park Road, for the meet between England and Scotland dodgeball teams. The Home Nations League was launched in January by British Dodgeball, the national governing body for dodgeball in the UK with the aim to raise awareness and to provide more opportunities for high performance players to develop in the fast growing team sport.

Hundreds attend vigil for Christchurch victims

Hundreds took part in a vigil on Friday evening at Sheffield’s Peace Gardens following the terror attack on two mosques in Christchurch, New Zealand in which 50 people died. The main suspect of the attack, Brenton Harrison Tarrant, has since appeared in court and has been charged with murder in connection with the shootings. Azz Mohammed reports for Sheffield Live!
