Thousands of Asda workers face a choice between losing their jobs or losing in-work benefits in a row over the introduction of flexible working contracts. The GMB union who represent Asda staff are being backed by Sheffield Trades Union Council in their dispute. The supermarket chain claims the changes are needed to adapt to the demands of competition. The government’s Brexit bill scraped through a second reading vote but has been put on hold by the Prime Minister following MPs rejection of the government’s three day debate timetable. Sheffield Stop and Scrap Universal Credit campaigners have presented to Sheffield Labour MP Louise Haigh a petition against the Government’s flagship welfare policy. Housing and homeless organisations in Sheffield have come together to share experiences and ideas to ensure everyone has a place to call home. Shelter, South Yorkshire Housing Association, Roundabout and Crisis were among Sheffield organisations at the event hosted at Theatre Deli to review support for the homeless including accommodation and housing services. Students at the University of Sheffield have launched an action group to defend the NHS with over 100 students joining since its launch at the start of the university term. Founder and medical student Dan Veness told Sheffield Live! the group plans to work alongside the Sheffield Save Our NHS campaign and has the backing of the Sheffield Students Union. Youth organisations in South Yorkshire are being invited to present proposals for funding from the region’s newly launched Violence Reduction Unit. The unit has been awarded £1.6m of Home Office funding for work on preventing and reducing violent crime and is inviting youth and community organisations to apply for grants of up to £20,000.
