British Gas engineers to strike over working conditions

Many households could see their boiler repairs delayed as British Gas engineers and other staff go on strike from Friday for five days. The industrial action is part of on ongoing row over working conditions. Speaking to Sheffield Live! David Douglas, a regional representative for the GMB union in South Yorkshire said the hire and fire is causing stress and anxiety among employees. A spokesperson for British gas said: “Our business needs to change to survive and protect 20,000 jobs. We know change is difficult but we have offered a fair deal that has been negotiated over 300 hours with unions – where base pay and pensions are protected.” Baillor Jalloh reports for Sheffield Live!

Councillor plea to stop anti-social behaviour

A Sheffield councillor has made a plea for people to report offenders to the police, after a new outbreak of anti-social behaviour in Arbourthorne. Ben Miskell, councillor for Park and Arbourthorne said two buses suffered from smashed windows after bricks were thrown by a group of youths. There were no reports of injuries but concern is growing about the potential threat to life, should the attacks continue. Similar incidents were reported in December and this led to buses being diverted from the estate. Baillor Jalloh reports for Sheffield Live!

Campaigners defeated in bid to save woodland

Campaigners fighting to save Bolehill Wood in Woodseats have lost their bid to save the woodland which was sold at auction for £68,000. Friends of Bolehill Wood went to their limit of £65,000 after a fundraising campaign to save the 2.4 acre site from developers. Mass vaccination centre opens at Sheffield Arena

A mass vaccination centre has been opened at Sheffield Arena, one of 30 new large scale NHS vaccination centres to enable thousands more people to be inoculated for protection against the coronavirus. The new centres are part of the plan to ramp up vaccinations with a priority for all those who are over 70 or clinically vulnerable. Campaigners fight to save woodland from development

Campaigners to save Bolehill Wood in Woodseats have been raising funds to bid for the land when it comes up for auction on Tuesday. Sheffield Heeley MP, Louise Haigh praised the activists’ efforts as “incredible.” Friends of Bolehill Wood, which was set up just two weeks ago, has already raised more than the guide-price of £10,000 for the two-and-a-half-acre site. New Sheffield football club enters county league

Less than a year after its launch, Sheffield City Football Club is to join division two of the Sheffield and Hallamshire County League. The new club, set up during the first peak of the Covid-19 pandemic, is offering a range of football and coaching opportunities. It first set up to offer coaching for young children and started two teams for under eights. Now it has produced an adult team that is set to join the county league. Public health workers in Sheffield are seeking input into the design of new services to support people with disabilities and their careers. Sheffield Americans react as new president takes office

Joe Biden has been sworn in as the 46th US President issuing a call for unity and renewal. In his inaugural speech, he promised to be a president for “all Americans” and urged people to come together.
