A petition to commit Sheffield to welcoming at least ten child refugees per year for the next ten years has been presented to Sheffield Council. The campaign has gained more than 500 signatures including one of the survivors of the Kindertransport rescue effort of World War Two, Sue Pearson, who came from Prague to Sheffield to live with a local family. An exhibition highlighting grass roots campaigns on housing and homelessness is on display at Union Street co-working space. The week long exhibition, led by Dr Sam Burgum, explores the links between poverty, inequality and housing and looks at how squatting, trespass and direct action campaigns have contributed to awareness and action. As part of international journalism week, Liberian journalist Rodney Sieh, founder and editor of Front Page Africa and author of the book “Journalist on trial”, addressed students at the University of Sheffield. The first of one hundred war memorial trees have been planted in Longley Park to commemorate those who lost their lives in the First World War. Further trees are to be planted in Firth Park, Greenhill and Herdings Park, and close to the Cholera Monument. Each of the plantings will be marked by a granite stone memorial with the inscription “lest we forget”. Sheffield City Region Mayor, Dan Jarvis, has announced the launch of a new scheme to help shape and grow the region’s music industry. The Sheffield Music Board will bring together artists, music businesses and festival organisers in partnership with UK Music. Afro-beat and hip-hop artist, Breis, praised the “incredible” Spirit of Africa Festival after headlining at the Crucible Theatre. Hundreds of students from across South Yorkshire took part in a First World War debate at King Edward VII secondary school to mark the 100th anniversary of the Armistice. The aim of the event was to increase young peoples’ understanding of the impact of the Great War and its legacy on society today. Baillor Jalloh reports for Sheffield Live!
A group of architecture students from the University of Sheffield are working with the university’s bioengineering department to investigate the use of algae to clean up air pollution and recycle waste into bioplastics. The students will be running a community event in Tinsley on 29 October with the aim of exploring applications of green technology in an area which is severely polluted by the nearby M1. Ecclesall Primary School has officially opened its newly extended school buildings following a £4.6 million expansion project. The development, which includes an additional 21 class rooms, has enabled the former Ecclesall Infant School to expand from through to primary with an increased intake from 180 infants to 600 children in total. Sheffield’s long awaited tram train finally began running only to be derailed on its first day of service after a crash with a lorry on Staniforth Road. The service was due to launch two years ago but has faced delays and cost overruns from an initial estimate of £15 million to a final bill of £75 million. Services were suspended after the incident.
