A new report has revealed more vulnerable children than ever need crisis support as local authorities cut spending on services which help prevent them coming to harm. According to the report, investment in early intervention support by councils in England fell from £3.8bn to £1.9bn (50%) between 2010/11 and 2020/21. The report was commissioned by The Children’s Society, Action for Children, Barnardo’s, National Children’s Bureau and the NSPCC. South Yorkshire and other parts of the UK recorded temperatures of over 40C (104F) for the first time since records began. Thermometers hit 40.3C in many parts of South Yorkshire, well above the previous high of 38.7C in 2019. Sheffield’s Supertram network was shut for the day due to the extreme heat conditions. The report of the Independent Commission into Racism and Racial Disparities in Sheffield sets out a series of recommendations and actions for Sheffield to become an anti-racist city. The report of the commission follows two years of consultations, addressing a wide range of issues and calls for key organisations in Sheffield to come together around a comprehensive plan of action. His comments comes as candidates hoping to replace Boris Johnson as the next leader of the Tory party and Prime Minster of the UK unveil their plans. Muslim communities across South Yorkshire took part in the celebration of Eid al-Adha over the weekend. The festival is marked by special prayers and feasts and follows Eid al-Fitr which marks the end of Ramadan, the Muslim holy month of fasting. In Sheffield prayers were performed in parks and mosques across the city. Wahid Nazir, a committee member at Ghausia Mosque on Firth Park Road, spoke to Sheffield Live! reporter Baillor Jalloh.
A new campaign has been launched by South Yorkshire Police in partnership with South Yorkshire Safer Roads Partnership urging van drivers to ensure their vehicles are roadworthy. The campaign reminds drivers and businesses about the importance of having a properly maintained and correctly loaded vehicle. A video is to also circulate online from next week. Barnsley Council has announced a new day support refuge for women in abusive relationships is to be established in the town to support victims. A report warned that the number of referrals has been increasing and cases were also rising among male victims. The cost of filling an average family car with petrol has reached £100 as fuel prices continue to rise. Soaring fuel prices have been driven by the war in Ukraine and moves to reduce Europe’s dependence on Russian oil. The RAC motoring has said the cost of filling a 55-litre tank with petrol reached £100 this month and £103.43 for diesel. Baillor Jalloh reports for Sheffield Live!
A Sheffield fitness charity has been rescued after a mysterious benefactor left the organisation £100,000 in his will. Age Active, which holds fitness classes for people over 50 in the city centre, was left the money by the unknown benefactor, part of a £1.1m payout to 11 organisations which received donations.
