Crookes man builds Shed of the Year

Sheffield firefighter, George Smallwood of Crookes, has won the national Cuprinol Shed of the Year competition for his eco-friendly shed which offers a haven for wildlife. Built over two months the shed features a self-watering roof top garden with beehives, a bug hotel and a hedgehog house. Baillor Jalloh reports for Sheffield Live!

Demand for support dogs on the rise

Support Dogs Sheffield told Sheffield Live! they are stretched to the limit with a huge increase in demand for support dogs to assist a range of conditions. The charity, who provide a free of charge service, are dedicated to increasing independence and quality of life for people with various medical conditions such as seizures and autism. Lord Mayor facing fight challenge

The Lord Mayor of Sheffield has been challenged, during a Town Hall meeting, to go head to head in a boxing match with an Ecclesfield Parish councillor. David Ogle, an independent elected in 2017 to represent the High Green ward issued the challenge to gain support for a community gym in High Green. Azz Mohammed reports for Sheffield Live!

Drivers set to face on the spot eye tests

Police are piloting a scheme to test the eyesight of all drivers stopped and which could be extended nationwide. Failure could lead to a driving licence being revoked. The scheme, being tested in Hampshire, Thames Valley and the West Midlands, follows calls for mandatory eye-testing of all drivers backed by the road safety charity Brake. Public urged to register as organ donors

Beneficiaries of organ donation are supporting a week long NHS-led campaign to promote voluntary registration as an organ donor in the event of death. Just over one in three adults are currently registered as organ donors with the government considering replacing current arrangements with an opt out system where people would be automatically included with the option to withdraw. Sheffield Live! reporter Azz Mohammed spoke to Sam Blackburn, a recipient who received a kidney donation in 2008.

Festival of sport brings communities together

More than 80 young people from across Sheffield joined a festival of sport at the weekend bringing together some of the city’s most disadvantaged communities. The event, a collaboration between several city-wide organisations and hosted at Sheffield University’s Goodwin Centre, featured a 5-aside football tournament, BMXing, grafitti workshops and film-making. The multi-sport festival was designed to give young people a chance to learn new skills and to improve links between communities. Baillor Jalloh reports for Sheffield Live!

Sheffield boccia athlete celebrates olympics gold

Sheffield boccia athlete and radio presenter, Sam Hindley, has returned from the Special Olympics GB 40th Anniversary Games with both a gold and a silver medal. The games held at the University of Stirling, Scotland, has been the biggest sporting event of the year for people with intellectual disabilities and also marks the 50th anniversary of the worldwide Special Olympics movement. Barry Chuckle funeral held at Rotherham United

The funeral of Barry Chuckle has been held at Rotherham United Football Club. While family members were at the ceremony, fans gathered outside the stadium to show support for the comedy legend. Paul Chuckle described his brother as his best friend and cried as fans shouted the famous catchphrase ‘to me to you’. Barry Chuckle died on 5th August aged 73 after a short illness. Freestyle football comes to The Moor
