Choir group seeks new dialogue after Dean of Sheffield resignation

Following the resignation of the Dean of Sheffield, members of the cathedral’s former choir group have said they hope for new dialogue. Peter Bradley resigned earlier this week 17 years after taking up the post and citing “tremendous pressure” seriously affecting his health. Sheffield Live! reporter Baillor Jalloh spoke to Kate Caroe of the Steel City Choristers, which was set up after the cathedral’s choir was dissolved.

New radio stations plan for Sheffield and Rotherham

A group of local and community media organisations have come together with an ambitious plan to expand choice for radio listeners tuning to digital radio in Sheffield and Rotherham. Community radio stations Link FM and Sheffield Live! have joined forces with Sheffield Community Media to establish a new digital audio broadcasting network. The joint venture, Shefcast Digital, has been set up to operate as a social enterprise. Baillor Jalloh reports.

Tramlines 2021 tickets nearly sold out

Tramlines Festival has said that over 90 percent of the advance tickets sold for the cancelled 2020 festival have been retained for next year’s event. The remaining tickets for the 2021 event went on sale this week. Baillor Jalloh reports for Sheffield Live!

More people quit smoking due to Covid-19

Ahead of the flu season health charity Action on Smoking and Health (ASH) is to launch its Stoptober campaign to encourage people to quit smoking. The October campaign will remind smokers that now more than ever is a good time for smokers to put their lungs first, quit smoking and breathe easier. Data from the UCL Smoking Toolkit Study show that in 2020 in England there has been a surge in smokers trying to quit and a big increase in success rates for those who try. Early closure will put jobs and pubs at risk say owners

Pub landlords in Sheffield are worried their businesses will not survive if the early closing restrictions continue for long. Last week the government ordered all pubs, bars and restaurants to shut at 10pm in an effort to reduce the spread of the coronavirus. Barrington Spence, owner of Barry’s on London Road and Jonathan Daniel Leigh, supervisor at the Rutland Arms on Brown Street told Sheffield Live! there should be more support from the government to help businesses. Covid cases rise amidst rule of six confusion

With local lockdowns in force across much of the north of England there is growing concern that frequently changing guidelines are causing confusion. In Sheffield, according to Greg Fell, director for public health, there has been a worrying increase in hospital admissions with most cases coming from household transmissions Azz Mohammed reports for Sheffield Live!

More funding for Sheffield care homes

Sheffield Council has announced it will be providing more funding to care homes in the city to help the fight against Covid-19. The local authority says it will deliver the additional funding that has been announced by the government in the last week. Sheffield Live! reporter spoke to Councillor George Lindars-Hammond, cabinet member for health and social care.

Skateable street project unveiled in Castlegate

A new skateable street architecture project has been unveiled providing a place for street sports in the Castlegate area, part of the grey to green regeneration project. The multi-use blocks and rails on Exchange Street offer a destination for skateboarders, BMX’ers and scooters. The project has been in the planning for around four years with support from Sheffield Council and building works provided free of charge by construction company NMCN. The unveiling comes ahead of skateboarding making a debut at the Tokyo Summer 2021 games. Sheffield Live! reporter Azz Mohammed spoke to Neil Ellis, head of engagement for Skateboard England.

Support grows in pandemic for universal basic income

Sheffield’s UBI Lab has been at the forefront of a campaign for a universal basic income that has gained momentum in the face of financial distress for many resulting from the coronavirus pandemic. UBI is an unconditional payment available to all instead of a means tested benefits system and has the aim of ensuring that no one should face the risk of falling into destitution. A growing network of cities and countries are exploring the concept with pilots ready to launch subject to government approval.
