Shahid Ali, coach for Allama Iqbal Cricket Club, told Sheffield Live! he is not surprised with the allegations of racism at Yorkshire Cricket Club but urges people to be cautious as investigations continue. His comment came as over 35 people have contacted Yorkshire Cricket Club’s whistle-blowing hotline since it was launched just a week ago. Sheffield rail travellers spoke to Sheffield Live! following the government decision to axe the eastern leg of HS2. The plan to connect leeds and Manchester to the the HS2 network are to be replaced with the Integrated Rail Plan (IRP) which promises faster train journeys between the East and West Midlands, Yorkshire and the North West, with £96bn expected to be invested into the upgraded rail network. Live and in person graduation ceremonies have been taking place at Sheffield two universities for the first time since the Covid pandemic struck 18 months ago. Over two thousand demonstrators marched through Sheffield city centre at the weekend to demand more action on the climate emergency. Dozens of Sudanese residents of Sheffield gathered outside the City Hall at the weekend to protest the military coup which has ended the country’s transitional civilian goverment. The protest was organised in solidarity with nationwide protests in Sudan and similar gatherings in other parts of the world. Sheffield Chilean Solidarity activists and friends gathered outside Sheffield Town Hall at the weekend to remember the atrocities that took place after the 1973 Chilean military coup. The US-backed coup led by General Pinochet against leftist Chilean President Salvador Allende left over 3000 Chileans killed or disappeared and many more in exile. Nyara School of Arts has been awarded a £10,000 grant from Sheffield Council to deliver a cultural history project capturing stories of Sheffield’s Windrush Generation. The Sheffield-based African diaspora arts and heritage organisation was unanimously chosen by a panel of community members following an open competition. Sheffield-based youth charity Always An Alternative have deployed a number of knife bins in Sheffield and Barnsley as part of a campaign to reduce knife crime and serious youth violence. Jonathan Trezise, a civil engineer from Sheffield, has run sixty miles in a long distance charity race. Managing to finish ninth out of 13 contestants Jonathan completed the race in 15 hours and 56 minutes. He received an award for oldest contestant and has raised just under £1,000 for his chosen charity, Christian Aid, which will go towards alleviation of suffering in poorer countries.
