King Edward VII School hosts WW1 debate

Hundreds of students from across South Yorkshire took part in a First World War debate at King Edward VII secondary school to mark the 100th anniversary of the Armistice. The aim of the event was to increase young peoples’ understanding of the impact of the Great War and its legacy on society today. Baillor Jalloh reports for Sheffield Live!

Biotechnology could tackle Tinsley air pollution

A group of architecture students from the University of Sheffield are working with the university’s bioengineering department to investigate the use of algae to clean up air pollution and recycle waste into bioplastics. The students will be running a community event in Tinsley on 29 October with the aim of exploring applications of green technology in an area which is severely polluted by the nearby M1. New Ecclesall Primary School launched

Ecclesall Primary School has officially opened its newly extended school buildings following a £4.6 million expansion project. The development, which includes an additional 21 class rooms, has enabled the former Ecclesall Infant School to expand from through to primary with an increased intake from 180 infants to 600 children in total. Sheffield tram train in crash on first day of service

Sheffield’s long awaited tram train finally began running only to be derailed on its first day of service after a crash with a lorry on Staniforth Road. The service was due to launch two years ago but has faced delays and cost overruns from an initial estimate of £15 million to a final bill of £75 million. Services were suspended after the incident. Sheffield Council U-turn on trees

Sheffield City Council have reversed plans to fell some of 300 trees originally earmarked for replacement and to phase in the work on others. The decision has come after several mediation meetings between council officials and tree campaigners. The Sheffield Trees Action Group, STAG, said they welcome the council decision but will continue to campaign to save healthy trees. Baillor Jalloh reports for Sheffield Live!

First UK screening for Palestine documentary

A documentary film narrating the struggle of Palestinians under Israeli occupation has had its first UK screening at a launch event held at Sheffield Hallam University Students’ Union. Behind the Frontlines tells the story of Dr Samah Jabr, head of mental health services in the West Bank, and her work with traumatised children. The film exposes the psychological strains and consequences of the Israeli occupation and how Palestinians have learned to cope. Baillor Jalloh reports for Sheffield Live!

Campaigners protest against refugee detentions

Dozens of anti-immigration campaigners travelled from Sheffield to the Morton Hall Immigration Removal Centre in Lincolnshire to protest against what they described as the cruel and inhumane treatment of asylum seekers. The protest was organised by the Sheffield branch of Student Action for Refugees together with South Yorkshire Migration and Asylum Action Group. Baillor Jalloh reports for Sheffield Live!

Totley school expansion creates 60 more places

Totley Primary School has officially opened its extended school buildings following a £2.1 million expansion project that has created an additional 60 places for children from the local area. The expansion includes a new two-storey teaching block with four classrooms, a staff room, a media suite, and a food technology and science lab. Baillor Jalloh reports for Sheffield Live!

Plaque unveiled to remember Tramlines founder

A memorial plaque for late Tramlines Festival Director, Sarah Nulty, has been unveiled this week on Devonshire Green by the Lord Mayor of Sheffield Magid Magid and Tramlines Operations Director Timm Cleasby. The Tramlines Festival was first held on Devonshire Green in 2009. Sarah died earlier this year at the age of 36 a few weeks before the tenth edition of the summer music festival.
