Spirit of Africa Festival comes to heart of Sheffield

Sheffield’s Crucible Theatre is preparing to host the city’s first Spirit of Africa Festival over the weekend of 26 to 27 October. Licence deadline looms for south Sheffield landlords

Landlords in London Road, Abbeydale Road and Chesterfield Road have just two weeks left to apply for a property rental licence or face possible fines and prosecution. The new Selective Licensing scheme for the area comes into effect from 1 November 2018 and means landlords must have a licence for every private rented property they control.

Mental health conference addresses cultural barriers and taboos

Mental health charities Adira, Sheffield Flourish and Mind hosted a well-attended conference at Sheffield’s Victoria Hall on mental health in Black and minority ethnic communities. The event, titled “Mental Health and Me”, sought to address the taboos and cultural barriers to access mental health services and information, including speakers, panel discussion with mental health service providers and break out spaces for conversation. Campaigners stage anti-fracking protest

Hundreds of protesters took part in an anti-fracking rally at Barkers Pool at the weekend following news that shale gas drilling is to resume in Lancashire after a failed legal challenge. According to protest organisers the Global Frackdown Carnival aimed to “show the scale and strength of the opposition” to the extraction of shale gas by fracking. Sheffield educational charity receives award

Sheffield educational charity, CRESST, has been recognised in the Teach Primary Resource Awards for its work on citizenship, personal social health and economic education. The charity is dedicated to increasing children’s life chances through training in conflict resolution skills and has recently developed a focus on social media and online conflict. Fun Palaces promote culture and community

The Fun Palaces campaign, a weekend dedicated to putting communities at the heart of culture, brought workshops and events to Sheffield’s libraries, theatres, parks and shopping malls. The campaign, organised across the UK and beyonds aims to democratise culture by nurturing untapped resources in the community and supporting people to develop new skills and polish up old ones. Campaigners seek second Brexit referendum
