Calls for wildlife corridor in Owlerthorpe fields

Environmental campaigners have launched a petition to save parts of Owlerthorpe fields to provide a wildlife corridor. The fields have been earmarked for new housing with work already started on one of the sites. Unions welcome Forgemasters deal

Unions and bosses at Sheffield Forgemasters have welcome the deal to nationalise the 215 year old steel firm. The Ministry of Defence is to acquire the company for £2.6 million with a commitment to invest up to £400m in modernisation. The company has a key role in the supply of steel to UK defence industries. Sheffield Live! reporter Azz Mohammed spoke to Martin Mayer, secretary of Sheffield Trades Union Council.

Capacity crowd at Tramlines return

Over 40,000 revellers a day attended the sold out three day Tramlines Festival at Hillsborough Park with no mask or social distancing requirements. Speaking to Sheffield Live! Timm Cleasby, operational manger for Tramlines said: “It’s been incredible. Across the city we have had an amazing reaction.” The return of the city’s biggest music festival has been a landmark for the UK live events industry being among the first to join the government’s pilot Events Research Programme to test the relaxation of coronavirus restrictions. Capacity crowds for Tramlines weekend

Tramlines music festival returned to Sheffield at the weekend with a capacity crowd at the main event and thousands joining Fringe at Tramlines on Devonshire Green. Tramlines Festival 2021 was organised as one of the pilot events in England for which mask and social distancing requirements have been removed. Eid celebrations see return of public events

Thousands joined Eid celebrations at the weekend including a family festival at Sheffield’s Umix Centre. With food stalls, face painting and bouncy castles the event followed the easing of lockdown restrictions on 19 July. Sheffield Love! report Baillor Jalloh spoke to event organiser Ali Bathati.

Anti-racism activists show solidarity with England footballers

Stand Up To Racism Sheffield gathered outside Umix centre and other city locations to take to the knee at the weekend in support of England footballers. Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho and Bukaya Saka suffered racial abused after England’s defeat in the Euro 2020 final. Migration Matters Festival ends on high note

Sheffield’s Migration Matters Festival, celebrating the positive contribution of migrants and refugees, drew to a close at the weekend. Turning the Tide democracy campaign to launch in Sheffield

A new democracy campaign calling for decentralisation of powers is to have its North of England launch in Sheffield. Cross-party campaign organisation Unlock Democracy is joining with Sheffield for Democracy to host the launch event. Organisers say the campaign aims to give powers back to local communities that have been stripped away over the last four decades. Baillor Jalloh reports for Sheffield Live!

Activists demand halt to Zimbabwe deportation plan

Protestors gathered outside UK Border Agency offices at Vulcan House to stop the planned deportation of over 150 Zimbabweans. According to the protesters Zimbabwe is not safe for asylum seekers especially those who have spoken out against the regime. Baillor Jalloh reports for Sheffield Live!

Food charity appeals for volunteer drivers

FareShare Yorkshire has launched an urgent appeal for volunteer drivers to help provide vital support to local communities by collecting food from its warehouse and delivering it to partner charities. The charity, part of a network of centres across the UK, takes good quality, in-date surplus food and redistributes it to over 340 local charities and community groups supporting vulnerable people, including homeless hostels, breakfast clubs and domestic violence refuges.Baillor Jalloh reports for Sheffield Live!
