Sheffield Council projects £18 million over spend in 2022/23

Sheffield’s Liberal Democrats are calling on Sheffield Council to take rapid action on its project overspend or risk central government commissioners taking charge. Official papers prepared for the forthcoming meeting of the Council’s finance committee has revealed the local authority is set to overspend by £18 million this financial year. Labour councillor Brian Lodge, co-chair of the finance committee, told Sheffield Live! that tough decisions will be made in the coming weeks to reduce the projected deficit.

Walking group for the visual impaired seeks new volunteers

The Sheffield Visually Impaired Walking Group is looking for volunteers to guide some of their members during their annual programme of walks in and around the Peak District and South Yorkshire. The group offers opportunities to visually impaired people to go walking regularly, assisted by trained volunteer guides. Since Covid restrictions were lifted more members have joined the group. Sheffield Live! reporter Baillor Jalloh spoke to Martin Wing, membership secretary for the group.

Nature partnership awarded £500k for woodland creation in South Yorkshire

The South Yorkshire Woodland Creation Partnership led by Sheffield & Rotherham Wildlife Trust has been awarded a £500k grant from the Trees Call to Action Fund. The partnership includes the Woodland Trust, Forestry Commission, South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority and South Yorkshire local authorities. It aims to create more than 250 hectares of new woodland by 2025, with an overall target of 12 percent cover across the region by 2050. Baillor Jalloh reports for Sheffield Live!

Vital role for community radio says UNESCO Chair during Sheffield visit

UNESCO’s first Chair of Community Media, Professor Vinod Pavarala, said community radio stations are vital to enable people to talk about issues that affect local communities. On a visit to Sheffield, hosted by Sheffield Live!, Professor Pavarala of the University of Hyderabad highlighted the role of community radio in promoting loca talent, enabling dialogue and supporting community languages. Cancer charity’s Sheffield Race For Life still open for entries

People across Sheffield are being encouraged to sign up for Cancer Research UK’s Sheffield Race for Life event. The charity’s much loved 3K run is to return to Graves Park on Saturday 11 June following the end of Covid restrictions. Money raised from the event will fund world-class research to help beat 200 types of cancer, including bowel cancer, prostate cancer, lung cancer, testicular cancer, brain cancer, children’s cancers and leukaemia. Euro 2022 roadshow comes to Sheffield

The Women’s Euro 2022 Roadshow brought hundreds of families and fans to a showcase in the Peace Gardens of the best of football, fitness and music. Sheffield is among the host cities for the Women’s Euro 2022 football tournament which is set to kick off in July. Organisers are aiming to inspire more communities, particularly young people and families, to get involved in the biggest European women’s sport event in history. Charity aims to raise dementia awareness

As part of Dementia Action Week, the Alzheimer’s Society is encouraging people to see their GP if they experience symptoms of dementia in order to get the support they may need. The campaign aims to raise awareness about the disease and its symptoms. Sheffield Live! reporter Baillor Jalloh spoke to Michael White, area manager with Alzheimer’s Society Sheffield.
