Sheffield charity aims to help young people into work

A new Sheffield-based charity aiming to get vulnerable young people into work is set to launch in February after a pilot scheme supported by local businesses and volunteers. Grow UK aims to nurture skills to support vulnerable young adults to succeed in the workplace through a programme of coaching, one-to-one support and practical work experience. Man with the pram aims for £1m charity target

Sheffield’s famous charity fundraiser, known as the “man with the pram”, told Sheffield Live! he is determined to raise at least a million pounds for the Macmillan cancer charity. John Burkhill, who turned 80 this month, has already raised more than £500 thousand for the charity after losing his wife, June, to cancer in 1992. The veteran is a familiar sight on Sheffield’s streets and has completed several fundraising marathons and long distance walks. He has previously been awarded a British Empire Medal for his charity work. Azz Mohammed reports.

Mental health conference addresses cultural barriers and taboos

Mental health charities Adira, Sheffield Flourish and Mind hosted a well-attended conference at Sheffield’s Victoria Hall on mental health in Black and minority ethnic communities. The event, titled “Mental Health and Me”, sought to address the taboos and cultural barriers to access mental health services and information, including speakers, panel discussion with mental health service providers and break out spaces for conversation. Sheffield educational charity receives award

Sheffield educational charity, CRESST, has been recognised in the Teach Primary Resource Awards for its work on citizenship, personal social health and economic education. The charity is dedicated to increasing children’s life chances through training in conflict resolution skills and has recently developed a focus on social media and online conflict. Demand for support dogs on the rise

Support Dogs Sheffield told Sheffield Live! they are stretched to the limit with a huge increase in demand for support dogs to assist a range of conditions. The charity, who provide a free of charge service, are dedicated to increasing independence and quality of life for people with various medical conditions such as seizures and autism. Sheffield to Monte Carlo road rally art revealed

The Bangers and Cash fundraising road rally to support youth housing charity Roundabout has put on display in the Winter Gardens the work of local artists who have painted the bonnets of the rally cars. Local businesses have each bought an ‘old banger’ for less than £650. The four day rally to Monte Carlo is scheduled to take place over four days in September. The painted bonnet artworks are to be auctioned later in the year. Azz Mohammed reports for Sheffield Live!

Mental health blogger nominated for diversity award

A charity worker who blogs daily about dealing with mental health issues has been nominated for a National Diversity Award. Sarah Cardwell, a mother of two and executive assistant at the Good Things Foundation charity spoke to Sheffield Live! about how she hoped to remove the stigma of mental health and help others by sharing her experience. Bananaman brings a smile despite terminal illness

A terminally ill man suffering from brain cancer has been out on Sheffield streets dressed-up as his favourite childhood super hero Bananaman, aiming to use his time to cheer up others. Ford Mitchell has been told he may have only a few years to live and has been visiting sick children at Weston Park Hospital and talking to the homeless and those in need. Lord Mayor brews up for charity
