New social housing development in Rotherham

New homes have been built on derelict land to help people in housing need in Rotherham and to provide a route onto the property ladder. The new development at Broom Valley has 44 homes with some to be rented and others available to be purchased through a shared ownership scheme with Rotherham Council. The development has cost around £6 million with part funding from Homes England. Sheffield Live! reporter Azz Mohammed spoke to Cllr Amy Brookes, Rotherham Council’s cabinet member for housing.

Safety campaign targets driving on drugs

A new campaign has been launched by the Safer Roads Partnership to address a growing problem of driving under the influence of drugs. The #don’tdoit campaign is to run across social media sites targeting young men with an informational video. Campaigners call for climate action

Sheffield environmental activists held a demonstration at the weekend to raise awareness of climate change ahead of the forthcoming UN climate change conference. Olympic hero Bryony Page looks forward to Trampoline World Championships

Sheffield’s Olympic bronze medallist Bryony Page is back in training and getting ready for the Trampoline World Championships to be held in Baku, Azerbaijan, in November. Speaking to Sheffield Live! Bryony said she was very happy with the bronze medal which adds to her silver from Rio 2016. Team GB returned home on Monday after one of their most successful Olympics, finishing third in the overall medals table with 65, equalling their tally in London 2012 and just short of their 67 medal top performance at Rio 2016. Food charity steps in to support children at risk of hunger during summer holiday

Children’s food charity Magic Breakfast is taking action against holiday hunger by providing thousands of healthy breakfasts to Sheffield school children. The charity, which works across the UK, provides support for children at risk of hunger across 20 schools in Sheffield. Utility price increase could leave families struggling

Clare Lodder, head of Citizens Advice Sheffield, has warned low income families may struggle this winter to pay their energy bills. Energy prices are set to rise in October for millions of UK households following the raising of the price cap by regulator Ofgem to cover suppliers’ increased costs. Sheffield students union rated best for fourth year running

The University of Sheffield has been awarded the What Uni student choice award for best students union for the fourth consecutive year. Over 41,000 student reviews from across the UK are taken into account for the award with the the union praised for its cinema, shops, study areas, a wide range of food outlets and excellent student activities. Sheffield activists remember Hiroshima victims

Vigils have been held at the weekend to mark Hiroshima Day, the 76th anniversary of the dropping of an atomic bomb on the city of Hiroshima. Over 150,000 people died, with and many more suffering generational defects that continue to this day. Baillor Jalloh reports for Sheffield Live!

Doncaster-based Sleep Charity has been presented with the Queens Award, one of the highest voluntary sector accolades. The charity has been recognised for its specialist services to address sleeping issues for parents and professionals. Students welcome Covid vaccine discounts

Taxi hailing apps and food delivery companies are to offer discounted rides and meals for customers who get a COVID-19 jab. Avimule Sibanda, a Sheffield Hallam University student said it was welcome news and would boost vaccine uptake among students and young people.
