Sudanese community pledge support for civilian rule

Sudanese residents in Sheffield have pledge their solidarity with protesters in Khartoum as they call on military leaders now running Sudan to hand over to a civilian-led transitional government. On Monday the African Union urged Sudan’s military junta to transfer power to a civilian-led political authority or face suspension from the AU. Earlier this years hundreds of Sudanese from across South Yorkshire marched through Sheffield demanding the resignation of Omar Al-Bashir. Bashir was president of the country for 30 years until his sudden resignation last week. Baillor Jalloh reports for Sheffield Live!

Somali TV channel opens Sheffield studio

International TV channel Eryal TV, based in Somaliland, has launched a multi-media hub in Sheffield to support young Somalians and others to get into the media industry. The studio is hosted by the Somali Community Centre on Cemetery Road and has benefited from the support of Sheffield Hallam University. Baillor Jalloh reports for Sheffield Live!

Drone design wins Space Agency booster

A team of medical students, supported by Sheffield’s Advance Manufacturing Research Centre, have won UK Space Agency funding to develop a drone to deliver emergency medical supplies to remote areas. The AMRC Design and Prototyping Group were asked to create a series of concept designs to illustrate the drone’s potential. Charities join efforts to tackle rough sleeping

Charities in Sheffield have pledged to join efforts with Sheffield Council to tackle rough sleeping following confirmation of a £400,000 grant for the city through the government’s Rough Sleeping Initiative. The funding is to support initiatives to assist people off the streets and into accommodation and support. Speaking to Sheffield Live! Wayne Hayle, director of St Wilfrid’s Centre, said the investment will have a major impact. Baillor Jalloh reports.

Campaigners call to revoke lap dancing licence

Campaigners have handed a petition to Sheffield Council demanding the local authority immediately revoke the licence for the city’s only lap dancing club, Spearmint Rhino on Brown Street. The petitioners say private investigators found that “no touching rules” were not enforced, which would place the venue in breach of its sexual entertainment licence. Responding to the claims the club said: “Spearmint Rhino imposes strict rules at all of our establishments to ensure they comply with the regulations which govern our premises. If those rules have been broken we take the matter very seriously.” Baillor Jalloh reports for Sheffield Live!

Immigration removal centres under scrutiny

Immigration rights campaigners have welcomed a report by MPs on the Home Affairs committee which recommends an end to indefinite detention and better protection for vulnerable detainees such as those who have experienced torture. The cross party parliamentary group said the Home Office has “utterly failed to ensure the safety of people detained in immigration detention centres across the UK”. Sheffield charity marks Down Syndrome day

Sheffield Mencap and Gateway joined the World Down Syndrome Day campaign to raise awareness of the rights and challenges of people living with Down Syndrome. Sheffield Live! reporter Azz Mohammed spoke to Nicola about her experience of living with the condition and to Sheffield Mencap senior manager Dave Swindlehurst.
