Former Sheffield City Council deputy leader, Olivia Blake, has told Sheffield Live! her “main reason for resigning was around democracy”. Councillor Blake resigned last month after a petition was submitted calling for a referendum on the way the council is run. Meanwhile, councillor Terry Fox has been elected unopposed as the new deputy leader. Baillor Jalloh reports.

British Kashmiri’s and their supporters organised a march in Sheffield town centre to protest the Indian government decision to end the autonomous status of Jammu and Kashmir. Since the decision the territory has been in lockdown with thousands of additional troops sent to the region which has been the subject of a dispute between India, Pakistan and China since 1947. Sheffield Liberal Democrat leader, councillor Penny Baker, has told Labour councillors they should get on with the job of serving the people and stop the current in-fighting. The comments come after six labour councillors resigned over the weekend from Sheffield City Council cabinet positions in a row over the way the authority is run. Sheffield’s Green Party has described the city’s clean air zone consultation as a “missed opportunity for meaningful change” because of its omitting to include private cars. Speaking to Sheffield Live! councillor Douglas Johnson said that if private cars had been part of the consultation process it would have led to more public engagement. A plaque dedicated to stainless steel inventor Harry Brearley has been unveiled at Portland Works by Sheffield United chairman and co-owner Kevin McCabe. Brearley is said to have had the first samples of stainless steel created at the Portland Works factory in 1913 when he introduced his idea to Ernest Stuart, manager at local cutler company R. F.
