Volunteers deliver aid to Polish border

Volunteers from aid charity Go Dharmic travelled to the Polish border crossing to deliver aid to those crossing over to safety from the war in Ukraine. Hanumann Dass, founder of Go Dharmic told Sheffield Live! that even the smaller border towns are seeing thousands of arrivals a day. Azz Mohammed reports.

Sheffield charity celebrates 70 years

Sheffield Mencap & Gateway is celebrating its 70th anniversary with the launch of a book of 70 stories of people with learning disabilities. The charity offers a range of support services to help people with earning disabilities to lead better lives. New stop smoking campaign launched

Sheffield Council have launched a new stop smoking campaign together with Smokefree Sheffield to show the impacts of cheap and illicit tobacco in the city as well as highlighting the importance of quitting. International Women’s Day celebrated in Sheffield and globally

The global day of celebration of the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women was marked in Sheffeld by events and activities including a drop-in organised by Together Women. International Women’s Day has been celebrated since 1975. Together Women is a local charity supporting women and girls. Volunteers in Kyiv unpack UK aid

Kyiv-based graphics designer Denis Dekhtiarenko is working with aid charity Go Dharmic to help move aid from the UK to Ukraine. He spoke to Sheffield Live! reporter Azz Mohammed together with Hanuman Dass from Go Dharmic.

Sheffield and Rotherham Wildlife Trust awarded £40,000 to help with flood defences

Sheffield and Rotherham Wildlife Trust has won a £40,000 Movement for Good award to support natural flood management work in South Yorkshire. The funding will extend the charity’s work to additinal sites in the Upper Don catchment area to mitigate flood risk. Ambulance service campaign highlights attack on frontline workers

A national campaign has been launched called Work Without Fear to highlight some of the attacks faced by ambulance workers whilst working on the front line. Last year thirty two ambulance staff members were abused or attacked across the country. In the Yorkshire and Humber region, there has been a 75% rise in reported incidents of physical and verbal abuse towards staff. Sheffield Live! reporter Azz Mohammed spoke to Jonathan Milnes, area clinical lead for South Yorkshire.

Ukrainian journalist speaks of fear for safety of family and friends

In an emotional interview, journalist Daria spoke to Sheffield Live! of her fears for family and friends in Kharkiv and eastern Ukraine. Daria is a former reporter with Hromadske Radio, a Kyiv-based independent community radio channel. She was among a group of Ukrainian journalists who, in 2018, took part in a study visit to the UK hosted by Sheffield Live! Hromadske Radio continues to broadcast from Kyiv with news in Ukrainian on the Russian invasion. Azz Mohammed reports.

Sheffield councillors pledge solidarity with Ukraine

Sheffield Council has passed an emergency motion pledging “complete solidarity with the Ukrainian people” and offering Ukrainians the sanctuary of the city. Councillors including council leader Terry Fox, Douglas Johnson of the Green Party and opposition leader Shaffaq Mohammed joined an anti-war demonstration outside Ponds Forge ahead of the full council meeting. Anti-war protests continue as Ukraine appeals for aid

A further demonstration took place outside Sheffield Town Hall on Monday in opposition to Russia’s war on Ukraine. Despite the heavy rainfall, hundreds turned out in support of those affected by the conflict. Nazar Zalynski, a Ukrainian living in Sheffield, spoke to Sheffield Live! reporter Azz Mohammed about the impact of the conflict.
