Lord Mayor facing fight challenge

The Lord Mayor of Sheffield has been challenged, during a Town Hall meeting, to go head to head in a boxing match with an Ecclesfield Parish councillor. David Ogle, an independent elected in 2017 to represent the High Green ward issued the challenge to gain support for a community gym in High Green. Azz Mohammed reports for Sheffield Live!

Drivers set to face on the spot eye tests

Police are piloting a scheme to test the eyesight of all drivers stopped and which could be extended nationwide. Failure could lead to a driving licence being revoked. The scheme, being tested in Hampshire, Thames Valley and the West Midlands, follows calls for mandatory eye-testing of all drivers backed by the road safety charity Brake. Public urged to register as organ donors

Beneficiaries of organ donation are supporting a week long NHS-led campaign to promote voluntary registration as an organ donor in the event of death. Just over one in three adults are currently registered as organ donors with the government considering replacing current arrangements with an opt out system where people would be automatically included with the option to withdraw. Sheffield Live! reporter Azz Mohammed spoke to Sam Blackburn, a recipient who received a kidney donation in 2008.

Bus service cuts prompt public ownership call

Passengers’ anger at bus service reductions in Walkley and Hillsborough has led to calls for bus services to be returned to the control of local authorities. Hillsborough councillor George Lindars-Hammond told Sheffield Live! that rising fares and cuts in services were unacceptable and that the private companies responsible should be brought into public ownership. Youth funding cuts linked to knife crime

A Sheffield youth worker has claimed cuts in funding for young people has contributed to the recent spike in knife crime in Sheffield. Saeed Brasab, founder of Unity Gym which aims to help young people to stay away from crime, told Sheffield Live! he would like to see more opportunities to engage young people in dialogue and learning new skills. Festival of sport brings communities together

More than 80 young people from across Sheffield joined a festival of sport at the weekend bringing together some of the city’s most disadvantaged communities. The event, a collaboration between several city-wide organisations and hosted at Sheffield University’s Goodwin Centre, featured a 5-aside football tournament, BMXing, grafitti workshops and film-making. The multi-sport festival was designed to give young people a chance to learn new skills and to improve links between communities. Baillor Jalloh reports for Sheffield Live!
