Protesters gathered outside Sheffield Town Hall to show solidarity with victims of police brutality in Nigeria following the killing by security forces of at least 12 civilians engaged in a peaceful demonstration in the capital Lagos. The killings followed weeks of demonstrations in Nigeria against the activities of a police unit known as the Special Anti Robbery Squad or SARS which has been accused of kidnappings and harassment. Despite government support measures, Corporation nightclub boss Mark Hobson told Sheffield Live! hospitality sector businesses remain in fear for their survival as tighter measures are set to come into force. Azz Mohammed reports.

Campaigners who have sought the closure of Spearmint Rhino on Brown Street have welcomed the company’s decision to surrender its sexual entertainment venue licence. The controversial strip club has been closed since lockdown in March and the property was put on the market in June. Earlier this summer the club also dropped a privacy case against campaigners who had commissioned secret filming of dancers at work. Sheffield Churches Council for Community Care has launched a new care service for Black, Asian and minority ethnic (BAME) groups. The aim is to support individuals aged 65 and over from BAME communities who are feeling isolated and lonely. Rehneesa Inez who is the BAME Community Engagement Officer for the SCCCC told Sheffield Live! they’re seeking volunteers to help run the project. Baillor Jalloh reports.

As part of Restart a Heart Day, Yorkshire Ambulance and the University of Sheffield’s Acute Care and Trauma Society are raising awareness on cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). Kuldeep Mathary, a medical student at the University of Sheffield, told Sheffield Live! many people don’t know how to respond when a person’s heart stops beating and more awareness is needed of the lifesaving technique. Over 70 human rights activists mounted a protest outside Vulcan House as part of the Justice For Simba campaign. The protest was part of the “Solidarity Knows No Borders” days of action to end what they describe as the government’s hostile environment towards asylum seekers. Earlier this year Simba Mujakachi was charged nearly £100,000 to receive life saving surgery. Baillor Jalloh reports.

Sheffield resident and university professor Laura Serrant OBE has been recognised as one of the most influential health figures in the country in the BAME50 list published by Health Service Journal. Serrant, who graduated from Sheffield Hallam University is currently Head of the School of Nursing at Manchester Metropolitan University and was awarded an OBE in 2018 for services to health policy.
