Mums United against gang and knife crime

A group of Sheffield mums have joined together in a bid to tackle the rise in knife crime in the city. The group, called Mums United, has been formed to try to prevent young people getting involved in gang-related violence and anti-social behaviour. Baillor Jalloh reports for Sheffield Live!

Street campaign highlights air pollution in Sheffield

School students joined a demonstration in Firth Park to highlight the dangers of air pollution following a report that puts Sheffield among cities that exceed the legal limits. The World Health Organisation has identified 30 areas in the UK where fine-particle air pollution is in excess of ten micrograms per cubic metre. Sheffield Live! reporter Azz Mohammed spoke to Graham Jones of the Burngreave Clean Air Campaign.

City strip club gains licence renewal despite objections

Spearmint Rhino on Brown Street has had its licence renewed by Sheffield Council despite over 150 objections. The lap dancing club has been in operation for over fifteen years despite complaints about the suitability of its location. David Barker, chair of Sheffield Council’s licensing committee said there was no evidence of poor practices at the club. Sheffield Live! reporter Azz Mohammed spoke to City Ward Councillor Douglas Johnson who has been campaigning for the club to be closed.

Hanover resident speaks of relief at cladding removal

Abdi Jama, a resident of the Hanover Tower in Broomhill, has spoken of his relief of the removal of the tower’s cladding following the Grenfell tragedy. The Hanover Tower is the only one of 24 Sheffield Council-owned tower blocks that failed safety tests carried out in the aftermath of the Grenfell fire in which 72 people died. Within two weeks of the disaster, works began to remove the Hanover Tower cladding. Baillor Jalloh reports for Sheffield Live!

Orgreave campaigners hold 34th anniversary rally

Hundreds joined a rally to mark the 34th anniversary of the Battle of Orgreave as campaigners continue to make the case for a public enquiry. In October 2016 Home Secretary Amber Rudd announced there would be no public enquiry but campaigners, including Brightside and Hillsborough MP, Gill Furniss, are calling on the Government and new Home Secretary, Sajid Javid, to think again.
