Hanover Tower residents unhappy with fire safety failure

Maintenance teams and contractors have begun to remove cladding on the Hanover Tower in Broomhall after cladding on the building failed government fire safety tests. According to Sheffield Council the work will take weeks to complete but they have told residents it is safe to live in their homes while the work is being carried out. The new fire tests were conducted after the Grenfell Tower tragedy which left at least 80 people dead and many others missing and presumed dead. Baillor Jalloh reports for Sheffield Live!

New mobility scheme launched in city centre

A new mobility scheme has been launched at the Moor Market that promises to make it easier for people with disability to get around the city centre. The scheme, called Mobile Sheffield, is funded by Sheffield’s Business Improvement District and Sheffield Council and includes a hire service for equipment such as mobility scooters, wheelchairs and walking frames. Humanitarian mission to deliver aid from Sheffield to Syria

Humanitarian activist and spoken word artist, Assim Khan, of Darnall, is to embark on a trip to the Syrian border to deliver aid to those displaced by war. The project has taken over six months to plan and will deliver £50,000 of humanitarian aid supplies. Sheffield Live! reporter Azz Mohammed spoke to Aasim Khan about the mission.

Sheffield charity puts Macular Week in focus

Sheffield Royal Society for the Blind is among the charities working to improve public understanding of the combined effects of deafness and blindness. One of the major causes of blindness in older age is macular degeneration which involves the loss of vision in the centre of the eye and affects around half of all people who are registered as blind or partially sighted. Free vitamins offer for pregnant women and babies

Sheffield Council has announced its support for an initiative to provide free vitamin tablets to pregant women and babies in a bid to eradicate rickets and to give a healthy start to life. Rickets is a preventable disease yet one which is also on the rise. It is caused by vitamin D deficiency resulting from a lack of exposure to sunlight. The council is now backing the healthy start campaign to reduce the prevalence of rickets. Fire service review Sheffield towers after Grenfell tragedy

South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue have begun additional fire safety checks on all tower blocks in Sheffield. Steve Helps, head of protection and prevention, told Sheffield Live that “early indications are that there are no similarities” between the cladding used on Sheffield high risers and the Grenfell Tower Block. He also confirmed the checks will be on all high risers and not just council-run properties. Simon Thake reports for Sheffield Live!

Prove our cladding is safe, tower block tenants tell Sheffield Council

The chair of Gleadless Valley Tenants and Residents Association has challenged Sheffield Council to prove that cladding installed on the six high rise tower blocks at Callow Mount is safe and different to the cladding installed at Grenfell Tower in London. Sally Dale, chair of Gleadless Valley TARA warned that residents are nervous and would like written evidence to prove their buildings are safe. Charity aims to break silence on stillbirths and neonatal deaths

Charity activists were out in Barker’s Pool at the weekend to raise public awareness and understanding of stillbirth and neonatal deaths, as part of Sands Awareness Month. According to the national Sands charity, 15 babies a day are still born or die just after birth. A Sheffield chapter of the Sands charity has been recently formed and is organising the local Sands awareness campaign. Baillor Jalloh reports for Sheffield Live!

Fire safety review planned in Sheffield after Grenfell Tower tragedy

Sheffield Council have confirmed that additional fire safety checks are to be carried out in residential tower blocks in Sheffield following the Grenfell Tower fire disaster in London. The fire safety review will commence from Monday, 19 June, and will be undertaken by South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service. Cancer patients in charity football tournament

A group of young Sheffield cancer patients have been taking part in a football competition for cancer awareness and fundraising. The charity event aimed to dispel the myth that enjoying life and playing sports must come to an end with a cancer diagnosis. Competitors took part in six-aside tournament, in which all teams had at least one person with cancer or having survived the illness. The event was organised by Clic Sargent and the Sheffield United Community Foundation. Baillor Jalloh reports for Sheffield Live!
