Sheffield to host 2021 European Championship football

Sheffield and Rotherham have been confirmed among the locations to host football matches for the UEFA 2021 Women’s European Championships. Sheffield United’s Bramall Lane stadium as well as Rotherham’s New York stadium will stage games in the prestigious continental championship featuring teams from 16 countries. The championship will be played at eight venues across the country before heading to the final at Wembley. The bid to stage the tournament was submitted by the Football Association as part of its ‘Gameplan for Growth’ strategy which supports the development of women’s football. Sheffield students raise HIV awareness

University of Sheffield students are getting behind the Youth Stop AIDS campaign to raise awareness about HIV and the stigma attached. A World AIDS Day panel discussion and film screening were among the activities organised in support of the campaign. Baillor Jalloh reports for Sheffield Live!

Sheffield carers to be rewarded with discount card

Sheffield Carers Centre have launched a new discount card to reward unpaid carers as part of a scheme supported by Sheffield Council. The Sheffield Carers Card offers discounts on products and services from food purchases to holidays and cinema tickets. The card will be issued to carers who are registered with the Sheffield Carers Centre. Sheffield Palestine campaigners observe international day

Campaigners from Sheffield were among those observing the UN International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People. The day marks the 70th anniversary of the UN General Assembly resolution in 1948 to partition Palestine into two independent Arab and Jewish states. Guineans call for end to brutal killings

Dozens of Guineans from Sheffield joined others in a demonstration at the Foreign Office in London calling for support to stop the killings of unarmed civilians by Guinean security forces. Ukrainian journalists’ fear over Russian threat

A Ukrainian journalist visiting Sheffield spoke to Sheffield Live! about fears for the country following the recent maritime clash with Russia. Campaigners stage migrants welcome rally

Dozens have joined a rally outside the Sheffield Town Hall to show support for migrants and refugees and the right to freedom of movement. The rally under the banners “Don’t scrap freedom of movement” and “Migrants are welcome in Sheffield,” comes following publication of government plans for post Brexit immigration controls. Christmas campaign to support the vulnerable and homeless

The Help Us Help campaign to tackle begging and support the homeless has been launched this week backed by local businesses and support organisations. More than 20 local businesses, including John Lewis, Virgin Money and McDonalds, have joined the campaign to help vulnerable people on the street with advice to the public and a call for donations of clothing and other goods.
