Dore church hall reopens as a community centre

Dore Parish Church Hall is to reopen it’s doors as a community centre following a fundraising campaign that has enabled a major refurbishment. The future was looking uncertain for the church hall in 2019 due to the work required on the building however a planned sale was opposed by local campaigners seeking to preserve the community asset. Activists urge holiday firm to withdraw from asylum deportations

Activists from South Yorkshire Migration and Asylum Action Group and One Rainbow Bridge Network have called on holiday firm TUI to pull out of a Home Office deal to assist asylum seeker deportation. Women’s safety artwork destroyed in Ponderosa Park

A public art installation in Ponderosa Park to raise awareness of women’s safety in public spaces has been destroyed by fire. The collaborative artwork installed by campaign group called Our Bodies Our Streets was recently unveiled in collaboration with the University of Sheffield. Calls grow for independent inquiry into Afghan boy’s death

Refugee agencies and Sheffield MP’s have called for an urgent and independent investigation into the safety of Home Office accommodation arrangements for refugees following the death in Sheffield of a five year old Afghan boy. Mohammed Munib Majeedi died after falling on Wednesday afternoon from a ninth floor window of the Sheffield Metropolitan Hotel on Blonk Street. Climate change health risk compared to Covid

Yorkshire schools join plastic waste art campaign

Children across the UK have transformed thousands of plastic bottle tops into stunning art murals, as part of a nationwide campaign to raise awareness about plastic waste. Fifty five schools from across Yorkshire took part in the recycling campaign including Thurcroft Infants School in Rotherham which has been named among the top ten finalists in the competition for its fish sculpture created from plastic bottle tops, recycled chicken wire, bubble wrap and garden cones. UTC boss praises student and staff achievement

University Technical College boss, Jess Stevenson, has applauded the work of Sheffield students and staff in the face of Covid pandemic disruptions. Students across the country have received record A level and GCSE grades for the second consecutive year.
