A grassroots science festival for Sheffield is in planning for Science Week in March 2020 with the aim to place science projects into public and abandoned buildings. Festival founder and science teacher Hassan Al Zaffar hopes the free festival will engage younger audiences from local communities and show them that science can be fun. Hundreds of school students took part in a climate change protest today in Sheffield, one of many in cities across the UK. The school strike for climate is an international movement of school students engaged in demonstrations and strikes calling for action on global warming and climate change. Activists say strikes will continue until the government hear and address their concerns. Sheffield Live! reporter Azz Mohammed spoke to organiser and youth activist Patrick Wakefield.
Social entrepreneurs from across the region gathered in Sheffield to share success stories and exchange ideas on future priorities for businesses and charities with social and environmental objectives. The event was organised by Social Enterprise Exchange, a project funded by the European Union which provides business advice and support including small grants. With support for Boris Johnson building in the Tory leadership race, Sheffield Live! spoke to Alex Tant-Brown, chairman of Sheffield Hallam Conservative Association. Former foreign secretary Boris Johnson extended his tally to 143 in the third round of voting while Rory Stewart has dropped out after receiving just 27 votes. Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt secured 54 votes, Environment Secretary Michael Gove gained 51 and Home Secretary Sajid Javid came in with 38. The four remaining candidates will face further voting rounds until just two are left. Party members will then be able to vote on the final two, with the winner becoming Tory Party leader and the country’s next Prime Minister. Baillor Jalloh reports for Sheffield Live!
Egyptians and the wider Muslim and Arab world have been shocked by the death of Mohammed Morsi, Egypt’s first democratically elected president, who collapsed in court after years in solitary confinement. Alaa Abdellal, an Egyptian resident in Sheffield, spoke to Sheffield Live! of his sorrow at the death of the man who came to power in 2012 after the Arab Spring but was ousted a year later in a military coup, led by General Abdel Fath el Sisi, the current president. Sheffield Hospitals Charity has launched a fundraising campaign to help make hospitals in Sheffield more dementia friendly. The charity has set a £200,000 target to be raised in 12 months for improvements that would provide a more comfortable environment for patients especially for those suffering from dementia. Campaigners marked the 35th anniversary of the Battle of Orgreave with a rally on Orgreave Lane at the site of the former coking plant. Orgreave Truth and Justice Campaign are continuing to seek a public enquiry into the events of June 1984 when miners were assaulted and arrested by police on charges that were later dropped as allegations emerged of fabricated evidence and police brutality. Hundreds gathered at Norfolk Heritage Park on Saturday to commemorate the 75th Anniversary of the D-Day landings. Veterans from Sheffield were joined for the Drumhead Service of Remembrance by others from France and the Commonwealth. The event was also marked with a fly past by a Lancaster Bomber. Veteran Roy Ashton, who took part in the Italian Campaign, spoke to Sheffield Live! about their role in the success of the Normandy landings. Report by Sangita Basudev.
Community activists held a vigil outside Sheffield Town Hall to mark two years since the Grenfell tower tragedy in London and to remember the victims. Seventy two people lost their lives in the tower block after a fire got out of control in the building.
