Sheffield’s rate of Covid-19 infections has been flat at around 50 cases per day as infections rise across the country. From Thursday millions of people in England will move to Tier Four coronavirus restrictions however South Yorkshire remains in Tier Three. One of England’s oldest folk dance teams have cancelled their traditional Boxing Day performance due to the coronavirus pandemic. The Handsworth Sword Dancers have performed their traditional Yorkshire ‘longsword’ dance every Boxing Day at Woodhouse Cross and Handsworth Church since 1963, continuing a tradition of dancing in midwinter dating back to the 1800s. The performances, which also include a mummers play and renditions of some of Sheffield’s unique carols, normally attract hundreds of spectators. Baillor Jalloh reports for Sheffield Live!
Shaun Duffy, an employment expert at Sheffield’s Citizen Advice has told Sheffield Live! the extension of the furlough scheme is good news for employers in the region. Two weeks ago, the Prime Minister announced the second national lockdown in England and the extension of the furlough scheme for another five months. Under the scheme employers can claim up to 80% of their employees wages or a maximum of £2500 a month from the government. This also applies to those who are self-employed. Baillor Jalloh reports.
Sheffield’s director of public health, Greg Fell, speaking to Sheffield Live! said he believes the city will go back into Tier 3 restrictions when the current lockdown ends. Under the new national lockdown, which came into effect on 5 November, pubs, restaurants, gyms and non essential shops are due to remain closed until 2 December. Azz Mohammed reports.
Ibrar Hussein, GMB Union branch secretary, said more support is needed for self employed workers affected by the Covid-19 pandemic. His comments come as South Yorkshire moved into Tier 3 of the new coronavirus restrictions in England. Baillor Jalloh reports.

Crookes Social Club are appealing to customers to return to help the business survive with bosses saying the club is on the brink of shutting down. Speaking to Sheffield Live! general manager and secretary of the club Maurice Champeau said the new 10pm closing time has affected the business severely. Baillor Jalloh reports.
Sheffield Hallam University has moved most of its teaching online, student union president, Andrew Adegbola, has told Sheffield Live! Earlier this week the University of Sheffield suspended all face to face teaching in an attempt to stop the spread of Covid-19 among students and staff. Both universities have recorded nearly a thousand positive cases since the return of students two weeks ago. Baillor Jalloh reports.
