Police campaign targets van drivers on road safety

A new campaign has been launched by South Yorkshire Police in partnership with South Yorkshire Safer Roads Partnership urging van drivers to ensure their vehicles are roadworthy. The campaign reminds drivers and businesses about the importance of having a properly maintained and correctly loaded vehicle. A video is to also circulate online from next week. Sheffield Live! reporter Azz Mohammed spoke to the South Yorkshire Safer Roads Partnership manager Joanne Wherle.

Barnsley Council to open a women refuge centre

Barnsley Council has announced a new day support refuge for women in abusive relationships is to be established in the town to support victims. A report warned that the number of referrals has been increasing and cases were also rising among male victims. Rosemary Clower, senior commissioning manager at Barnsley Council spoke to Sheffield Live! reporter Baillor Jalloh.

Sheffield motorists struggle with fuel price hike

The cost of filling an average family car with petrol has reached £100 as fuel prices continue to rise. Soaring fuel prices have been driven by the war in Ukraine and moves to reduce Europe’s dependence on Russian oil. The RAC motoring has said the cost of filling a 55-litre tank with petrol reached £100 this month and £103.43 for diesel. Baillor Jalloh reports for Sheffield Live!

Fitness charity receives £100k mystery bequest

A Sheffield fitness charity has been rescued after a mysterious benefactor left the organisation £100,000 in his will. Age Active, which holds fitness classes for people over 50 in the city centre, was left the money by the unknown benefactor, part of a £1.1m payout to 11 organisations which received donations. Sheffield Live! reporter Baillor Jalloh spoke to Dave Schofield, coordinator for Age Active.

Dozens join rally in solidarity with rail workers

For a third time this week, rail passengers have faced widespread disruption and cancellations as Britain’s biggest nationwide rail strike for three decades continued at the weekend. Workers responsible for train lines and infrastructure across the UK walked out on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday over a pay dispute and compulsory redundancies. The government and Network Rail have said changes are needed to modernise the rail network. On Saturday dozens of people attended a rally outside Sheffield’s East Midland train station to stand in solidarity with the RMT union workers. Baillor Jalloh reports for Sheffield Live!
