Loan shark suspect arrested in Shiregreen

A 44 year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of illegal money lending and money laundering following a joint operation involving trading standards officials and South Yorkshire Police. The England Illegal Money Lending Team (IMLT) working with Sheffield City Council’s Trading Standards Department and South Yorkshire Police executed a warrant at a property in Shiregreen, seizing documentation. Police launch crime crackdown in Sheffield

South Yorkshire Police have been carrying out an intensive crime sweep, part of Operation Duxford, targeting Sheffield estates and involving hundreds of officers. The dedicated operation in areas including Darnall, Parson Cross, Arbourthorne, Page Hall and Burngreave has included planned visits and intelligence led warrants to tackle crime and to support vulnerable people. Police launch new campaign on drink driving

South Yorkshire Police are urging drivers to avoid driving during the festive period while under the influence of drugs or alcohol. The campaign to discourage people from irresponsible drinking emphasises safety and alcohol awareness with the aim to reduce drink driving, alcohol related violent crime, vulnerability, domestic violence and underage drinking. Additional measures include drink drive enforcement, test purchasing, the roll out of fixed penalty notices, working with licensed premises and increased patrols to deter people from drink driving. South Yorkshire Police join campaign to end violence against women

International Day for the elimination of violence against women, also known as White Ribbon Day, marks the beginning of an annual 16 day international campaign against violence against women. This year South Yorkshire Police are supporting White Ribbon Day with officers and an independent sexual violence advisor available in the police mobile hub in Sheffield City Centre to provide support services and answer questions from the public. Chainsaws before dawn as residents wake to police-backed tree felling operation

Residents in Rustlings Road were awoken before 6am as Sheffield City Council contractors arrived with a police escort as part of a controversial tree felling programme. Home owners and occupants, many of whom have campaigned to save the trees, were awoken by police knocking on their doors to remove vehicles from the road as Amey contractors arrived in a surprise nighttime operation. Three people were reported to have been arrested as furious residents sought to prevent the work going ahead. Sheffield Hallam MP, Nick Clegg expressed outrage at the Council’s action. Cars destroyed in Parson Cross arson rampage

Police have appealed for witnesses after eleven cars were set on fire in a three-hour rampage in Parson Cross on Friday night. Thousands of pounds of damage has been caused, with some of the vehicles almost completely destroyed. The incidents happened on Herries Road, Barrie Crescent and Morgan Road between 11.30pm on Friday night and 2.00am on Saturday morning. Victims told Sheffield Live they were unsure whether insurance would cover the costs.

Sheffield streets closed after WWII bomb unearthed

South Yorkshire Police have cordoned off Matilda Street and surrounding roads, following discovery of a World War II munition on a construction site. The same area was sealed off last week when three explosives were found by builders. A South Yorkshire Police spokeswoman said: “Officers are currently in Matilda Street, Sheffield, after a device, believed to be World War II munition, was discovered during construction work. “Police were called at around 9.30am this morning.” The site has been secured by police, who are liaising with the military explosive ordinance disposal unit.

Police make fresh appeal to catch Tommy Ward killers

Police have made a fresh appeal for information, one year on, in the case of 80-year-old Tommy Ward. Ward, who was found in his home in Maltby with life-threatening injuries one year ago, was taken to hospital where he remained in a critical condition until he died of his injuries on 23 February 2016. Liberal Democrat leader slams police chief sacking

The leader of Sheffield’s Liberal Democrat Group Shaffaq Mohammed has condemned the Police and Crime Commissioner’s decision to remove Chief Constable David Crompton. Councillor Mohammed questioned whether crime commissioner Dr Alan Billings should have acted earlier rather than waiting until two months before Crompton was due to retire.
