Writer and broadcaster Johny Pitts, who grew up in Firth Park, spoke to Sheffield Live! about Afropean, his recently launched book exploring African and European identities. The book tells a journey of exploration, self reflection and travel focussing on the black European experience and the multiple allegiances of new generations. A new Sheffield-based social enterprise aims to promote positive images of sub-Saharan Africa through a children’s book club, educational workshops, lectures, campaigns, festivals and the production of educational material. True Talk Africa launched in February and is encouraging children, including those of African heritage, to discover literature by African authors during their school holidays. Former Sheffield Wednesday and England international footballer, Carlton Palmer, has launched his autobiography with a book signing in aid of the Cavendish Cancer Care charity. Palmer has committed 20 per cent of the cover price of signed copies to be donated to the charity. The retired midfielder said he has lost many friends to cancer and called it “the devils disease”. The British Humanist Association have sent free copies to Sheffield schools of the book ‘What is Humanism?’ after a successful national crowdfunding campaign. The book, by Michael Rosen and Annemarie Young, is the first of its kind aimed at primary and secondary school children, and was published to support teachers who want to explore non-religious ethics and humanist worldviews. Carrying the subtitle ‘How to live without a god and other big questions for kids’, the book features contributions from well know faces who also identify as humanists, including comedian Shappi Khorsandi, physicist Jim Al-Khalili and actor Stephen Fry.
